The pale faced Uchiha boy lay on the ground in the center of a large field of sunflowers, allowing the leaves of a bent over stalk graze the side of his face.
Next to him, the tan demon child sat, gently plucking petals off a flower he had picked earlier.
The wind blew softly, making the sunflowers sway back and forth, as moon light and shadows danced around the two boys.
The blue eyes of the tan boy slowly removed their gaze from the flower and redirected to the night sky, leaning his head back, watching the stars. "Sasuke?"
"Yeah?"
"Have you ever taken the time to think about certain things being . . . different?"
"What do you mean?"
"Like . . . what if I was a girl? Or you? What if we were commoners and not ninja? What if this whole town didn't exist? None of us existed? What if Orochimaru never attacked Konoha?"
"Sometimes. Why?"
"Well, haven't you ever wished that some of those things were true?" Sasuke sat up and stared at Naruto. But Naruto's gaze never left the sky.
"Just about every day. Why?"
"Have you ever wished that you were never with me? That you were straight?" Naruto let his eyes wander over to the sharingan prodigy, not bothering to move his head, meeting an appalled expression. "Why do you ask? Do you secretly wish these things? Do you not appreciate our relationship?"
"No. I never said that. And you didn't answer my questions." Sasuke looked away from the demon boy's prying eyes. He quickly turned his gaze to the shadows that moved on the ground near him, at one moment making his hand pale and white, then seconds later making it seem black and dark, blending with the ground underneath him. "Does it seem that way? Do I act like I don't love you?"
"That's not the real question." Naruto cupped Sasuke's chin in his hands and made Sasuke face him. "Do you love me?"
