It was hard to open his eyes now, now that the ages of the world had gone by in their usual whirlwind around him. Once he had hope of finding the others, the entwives, but he didn't think they'd come back now. He was getting slow now, treeish. Treebeard, Fangorn, hardly ever even opened his eyes anymore, or went walking very far anymore. He was old, and there were some others to look after the trees when he didn't awake again, though not many now.

So he stood there in the forest that he loved, thinking to himself, eyes closed, looking for all else like any other tree. Then he heard it, the soft thrumming of entish in his ear. Ah, but no ent could make such a noise.

The great green eyes snapped open with a speed no one thought they were capable anymore, especially not their owner. Turning his head but slightly, he looked into pools of clearest crystalline blue, deep and shallow in their own right. Here had come the day that he had dreamed about for so long.

She was saying something, the entwife was, something in entish, but Fangorn had grown slow treeish lately, that his mind could no longer follow the slow beat, the subtleties of his own language. He opened his mouth to speak, to ask her to slow down, or to switch to common, but he could find no words, nothing to say. She understood this and stopped her speech immediately, a sad look playing briefly across her features.

For a long while, silence passed between them, and the great ent's eyes began to droop again, but his were not the only that were closing. The entwive's were as well. They did not have much longer.

She moved next to Treebeard slowly and laced her great arm in his. She had longed for this moment as well, and it had come. She would not loose what she wanted most, nor he her. Fangorn let out a great sigh as his eyes slowly closed, taking in a last look of the world he deemed now more beautiful than before.

They rested now, as trees, trusting in the ones younger than them, and the ones that would soon follow. Standing together in the midst of the forest, they dreamed as one, their imaginings reaching the farthest stars, but never the world as it would become.

*** My first lotr fic that I really liked. Yes, it's short, but.um.shoot, I'm going to come back to this and call it total (insert curseword of your choice). When that day comes, I'm sure I'll edit it and reupload it.
