Of Wishers and Beggars
Disclaimer: I do not own these characters only the plot it mine
Kain sat on a park bench absentmindedly feeding the ducks until his bag of bread ran dry. They continued to flock around him but he couldn't care less. His mind was a thousand miles away.
"What brings you out here so close to sunset Sergeant Major?"
Fuery turned his head toward the sound of a voice he'd know anywhere, "Nothing Sir just feeding the ducks."
Roy looked at the empty bag beside his subordinate than back to the man, "Looks like you've been here a while and they've eaten their fill. What else is on your mind?"
Kain sighed as he took his glasses off to clean the lenses. Kain Fuery was a lot of things but a fool wasn't one of them. He knew where to draw his lines. There were many things within his grasp: A promotion, the invention or improvement of a better long distance communication device, even starting his own animal shelter was a possibility. However, just as those things were within reach others were so far away they were hard to even imagine…but he managed to do so despite their improbability.
As he sat there looking in the obsidian eyes of one of the country's most decorated war heroes, the military's youngest Colonel and his commanding officer, Kain drew that line. Despite the pain it caused him to do so.
"I wish I had the words for it, Sir," he said as he slipped his glasses back on.
"If wishes be horses then beggars be riders," Roy said as he sat down beside the forlorn man.
Kain thought about the proverb and for a second he contemplated taking the action the saying implores the wisher to take. Shaking his head and filing that notion away under most ridiculous idea ever another thought came to mind that made him chuckle.
'"What's so funny?"
"Uh well…you see," damn this was uncomfortable but Roy had a sense of humor right? "You see taken that your last name is what it is and I made a wish…the implications were…I mean could be…never mind."
Roy smirked at the nervous man and said, "Indeed they could," as he let his hand rest gently on Fuery's thigh.
Large brown eyes grew even wider as a red tinted face turned to look at Roy.
"Would you care to join me for a cup of coffee? I have an imported blend I've wanted to try since it arrived few days ago," was the offer as gloved fingers drew lazy circles on Kain's thigh.
Kain managed to mutter a yes while remaining conscious. A feat he was damn proud of considering the situation. When Roy stood and reached for his hand Kain almost pinched himself but decided against it. If he was dreaming he had no desire to wake just yet.
