A/N: I wrote this little thing for the Nine Lives Halloween Challenge. Let me know what you think.
Carol pulled the red hood to her coat up over her head and stood on the front porch of her farm house. She could hear the noise off in the distance and it instilled fear in her heart. It wasn't like any other noise she had ever heard before, it was a howl. She never heard anything like it until she moved to this town with her husband.
They had come back, like they always did.
She and her daughter Sophia lived here alone now that her husband had left her. It had been six months since Ed ran off with one of his tramp girlfriends.
Good riddance was usually Carol's mindset with regard to him, except when it was a full moon and she heard those sounds again.
He had protected them at least and now they were alone to spend each night in fear until the cycle of the moon finished.
She took the business card out of her pocket and turned it around in her hand.
Dixon Brother's Exterminating
She needed to do something and these guys were recommended by a few of the farmers around. Just the other day Herschel Greene her next door neighbor was singing their praises during the last full moon.
She dialed the number and made an appointment with one of the brothers to come to the house the next night before night fell. She didn't really think it was going to make a difference though.
So many people had tried to rid their little town of these beasts and many had been lost. It was just something you accepted.
It was how their life was and you just dealt with it and moved on.
Everyone knew to stay inside when the moon was full and all the houses had wolf bane hanging in front of the doors.
Carol's hung from the porch that she stood on right now.
She had seen one of the beasts in her yard during the last full moon, it stood on its hunches and looked at the house, she swore it did as she watched out the window.
She could not have that.
She had to protect her daughter.
So she called The Dixon's.
The next night he knocked on her door just before sundown. The man with the bow slung over his back.
"I hear you have a pest problem Miss. I'm Daryl Dixon." He said to her at the door.
"Carol. Carol Peltiere."
He reached out and shook her hand, his grip was firm and his hands were calloused, from the work he did she imagined.
"You're going to kill them with that bow and arrow?" She asked incredulously, Herschel really had a screw loose to recommend this guy,
"It's a cross bow and Yes I am." He nodded to her. "I'm the best there is"
"But you need a gun, and silver bullets."
"It's a sliver arrow Miss, It will get the job done." He said. "Now tell me where the pests are."
