My God, Lucifer whispered now, and then -
Into His ear - tell Me what makes You great.
You, My Devil, God whispered in reply,
You, My Angel, I am loved for Your hate.
Recall, My Lord, when I was as high as You?
Then, it's true,
Never, My Prince, God said in sweet debate.
Someday, My Love, I'll tempt You, too, to eat
The so-sweet fruit Demeter's daughter ate.
You'll have Me for Your own.
But what soul shall sin,
If he hath sinned alone?
If God hath sinned,
Then tell Me, what is sacred?
But cowering Hope in Pandora's box,
Which by Mine own hand was led.
