Jay was sitting on his hospital bed, fighting tears when his brother entered the room.
Too much happened. Yesterday seemed like a never endling nightmare.
It wasn't the physical pain, which let him feel this way. The painkillers did a very good job, to hide all consequences of his abduction. But no one was able to heal the pain inside his head as fast as the wounds and scratches could be fixed.
Without noticing the condition of his younger brother, Will Halstead looked at the results of the test, looking forward to disucuss it with his brother.
„No broken rips, no broken bones in general. Your vitals are still good. And there is no need for you to be monitored closely. Seems like you're gonna be released tomorrow."
Silent tears ecsaped from Jays eyes.
Suddenly the memories appeared in his head again. The beating, the fear of dying and to suffer from pain. It seemed like yesterday.
Finally Will looked at his younger brother in surprise. He didn't expect what he saw.
Still in shock he glanced at him in a worried way and placed his hand on his shoulder.
„Jay? Everything okay?"
He didn't answer, just stared at the wall and wiped his cheecks in ashament.
„Hey, bro. You wanna talk?"
With Jay shaking his head, Will sighed worriedly, then putting his documents aside before he gently pulled his younger brother in a hug.
Filled with sadness and relief the younger Halstead didn't fight his grip. For a short second it felt like being 5 again. A flashback to that moment where Will comforted him, after he fell from his bike and hurt his knee.
Evantuelly his emotions overwhelmed him. Will hugged him tightly after his sobbs got louder.
„It's over. You're gonna be alright", he whispered.
Jay nodded in agreement. Even if he didn't know if it was because he wanted to encourage himself.
Will held him close for a while, only let go when Jay moved apart.
„You feel better now?"
The younger Halstead agreed and glanced outside the window.
„I'm sorry. I didn't want to…"
He couldn't end his sentence, because he was interrupted by Will.
„ Jay, if there is someone who should be sorry, then it's me. I should have been there for you earlier. And I'm still glad that things worked out like this."
The younger Halstead remained in silence, still comprehending what happened before.
„It was Erin."
„What?"
Will didn't understand.
„What are you talking about, buddy?"
„They sent Erin in to save me. Without her I wouldn't be alive today."
Will Halstead smile got bigger within seconds. He knew that his younger brother had a crush on his partner.
„Thats amazing. We should celebrate at Mollys as soon as you're able to stay on your own."
Jay sniffled and shook his shoulders.
„I don't know if it's that easy. She went through a lot during the last weeks. We lost one colleague which effected her so we probably should slow down a little bit."
„However."
Will patted him on the back.
„Listen, kid. Since you need some help, even if I release you tomorrow I want to have eyes on you. So I decided to move in for a couple of days."
„Sounds good", Jay admitted, when Will started to examine his burned skin.
„Does that hurt?"
„Just now and then."
Will helped Jay to take off his shirt, to auscultate his chest with his stethoscope.
Halstead moarned in pain.
„Alright. Take a deep breath for me", Will asked Jay, who followed his order.
Suddenly the door opened and a nurse walked in.
„Dr. Halstead, we need you in the ICU."
„I'm coming", Will informed, before he pulled down Jays hospital gown.
„I've got to go. Let's talk later. Keep a stiff upper lip! I'll be right back", Will cheered up his younger brother, who twinkled at him.
„Will do."
Jay let himself fall into the pillow to close his eyes to fell asleep within minutes…
