This is for a song challenge that my friends set up, where someone chooses a song, then everyone writes a short story based on two lines of lyrics from that song. This story is set near the end of James and Lily's seventh year. They're dating and have already decided to join the Order of the Phoenix, but Lily's worried about their future.
"We're giants in a little man's world
My heart is pumping up so big that it could burst"
- Ten Feet Tall, by Afrojack
Lily heard the woosh noise of James's broom just before her hair blew into her face. He must have flown over her, she reasoned. When she had all of her hair pushed out of her face and pulled into a tight ponytail, she looked up. Hovering just above ground in front of her, was James Potter.
Lily sighed and smiled. "Hello James."
"Lily dearest, how are you doing on this fine morning?" James let got of the broom and put his hands on his hips. With his back straight, his crooked smile, and his hair blowing in the light wind, he looked like a cowboy from the old Western movies Lily's dad liked.
"I'm perfect, James," Lily laughed lightly. "What are you doing here?"
"I've come to pick up my lovely girlfriend for a little trip," he loudly popped the P in trip.
"A trip where?" Lily asked, indulging James.
"Get on," James said, patting his broom, "and I'll show you."
"On that?" Lily asked with horror. "James, I –"
"I know you've never flown before," James nodded with a sincerity that, after dating him for months, no longer surprised Lily, "but I promise I won't let you fall. I also promise that you'll love this."
Lily sighed. "Alright." She climbed onto the broom, sitting behind James and feeling lucky that she didn't have her books with her. She wrapped her arms around his waist and put her chin on his shoulder. "If I fall off and die, I will come back and haunt you for three hundred years."
"You're not going to fall and die, Evans, but that's good to know," James laughed as he kicked off from the ground. Lily squealed as they rose into the air.
To put Lily at ease, James rose as slowly as possible for half a minute, then began steadily increasing his speed. Lily's heart pounded in her chest. She closed her eyes for a moment, before peaking open and looking down. The people on the ground looked like little dolls.
"They're so little!" Lily laughed. "We're giants, James, and they're little!"
"Puts everything in perspective, doesn't it?" James replied.
James's "trip," Lily found, consisted of flying above Hogwarts, feeling the wind whip around her, and looking down at those below. They looked so small, which amused Lily to no end. She also found that she liked flying, but that she definitely could not do it on her own.
They touched back down on the soft grass around lunchtime. Lily assumed so because her stomach was growling lowly, and she'd had a large enough breakfast to last for hours.
She swung her leg over the broom to stand straight and staggered. James caught her and kissed her cheek as he righted her. He kept an arm around her waist, threw his broom over his other shoulder, and led her inside.
Lily put a hand to her chest, over her heart. "My heart's still pounding," she said breathlessly.
"But you liked it right?" James smiled hopefully. "You had fun?"
Lily nodded. "Oh yes."
They walked in silence for a moment, before James spoke again.
"You've been worried lately, I could tell."
Lily was surprised. She thought she'd hid her worries well. "Yes," she admitted. "The war … our future … James, what if– if we … My head's been a mess thinking about everything. I'm worried that –"
He silenced her with a soft, brief kiss. "Hush, Evans." He smiled. "Lily, we'll be fine."
Lily sighed. "Promise?"
"'Course, Lily. Of course."
Thanks for reading. I'd love a review to tell me your thoughts. :)
