Chapter 1: A Potion Gone Wrong
-Gryffindor Common Room, 1976-
"Ahh, come on Moony! It won't kill you!" Sirius whined. "Just one taste. Please?"
"Padfoot, I refuse to drink anything that you have made without seeing the recipe and
ingredients first," Remus replied. "Come on, show them to me."
"Uhh, about that. There is no recipe, and we don't remember what ingredients we put
in it," James said with a shrug, as if this was no big deal.
"Yep! Prongs and I made it up!" Sirius said proudly.
"Then there is no way I am drinking that," Remus said, crossing his arms defiantly.
"Please, Moony!" James whimpered. "We would have used Wormtail, but he's busy
getting extra help from McGonagall, so you're our second contestant!" He said this last
part as if it was a great honor to try a completely made up potion.
"What is it supposed to do, anyway?" Remus asked.
"It's genius!" Sirius cried. "It'll speed up time so classes go by faster, then we'll have
more free time!"
"But won't our weekends get sped up as well?" Remus asked.
Sirius shrugged. "We'll work that out later. Just be a pal and try it out for us, ok?"
"Fine, I'll try it," Remus said, giving in. "But you two better drink it as well. I don't
want to be the only one poisoned."
"Sure, whatever," James said. He had just noticed that his crush, Lily Evans, had
walked into the Gryffindor common room.
Both Sirius and Remus followed James' eyes. Remus smirked and shook his head.
Sirius, on the other hand, exclaimed, "Mate, you have serious issues to work out! She
hates you and you know it, so why are you even trying?"
"What? Did you say something?" James asked dumbly, not taking his gaze off Lily.
"Come on, Romeo, pay attention to the plan," Sirius said, hitting James over the head
with the back of his hand.
"Yeah, ok," James replied sadly, finally looking away from the beautiful red-headed
girl.
The common room was almost completely deserted; everyone was either outside
enjoying the cool fall weather or still eating lunch. This left it easy for the three friends
to have the potion out in clear view. No one usually messed with them anyway; they were
too worried James or Sirius would jinx them for coming into the Marauders' business.
Sirius filled three vials of the light-greenish, yet slightly lumpy, liquid and handed one
to James and another to Remus.
"On three," he said. "One...two....,"
"Hey, what are you doing?" asked a shrill voice from behind them. The three friends
turned to stare into a pair of bright green eyes.
"Nothing," Sirius replied, turning away from Lily Evans.
"Oh, really," Lily said with a glare in her eyes. "What's in those vials?"
Sirius was about to answer, but James had just gotten an idea and cut his friend off.
"Why don't you drink it and find out, Evans," he said, smiling in a sort of evil way.
"There could be anything in those vials and I am not going to risk my life just to find
out what you three are up to," Lily replied with fire in her emerald eyes.
"Suit yourself," James said, lifting the vial to his lips. "Chicken!" he muttered under
his breath.
"Excuse me? I am not a chicken! Lupin, give me one of those vials!"
Remus, looking slightly shocked, handed her one and she immediately downed it. But
surprisingly, she also disappeared, leaving the three boys to stare at the place where she
had been standing only moments before.
"Well, here goes nothing," Sirius said with a smirk, and drank his as well. James and
Remus followed suit. They, too, vanished immediately.
