Fire in the Sky

The day was drawing to a close over The Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters, the sky had turned all the gorgeous shades of orange, pink, purple and blue, and all the students and teachers had begun to make their way back inside after a long day of celebrating their victory over Apocalypse.

All, save for one lone figure.

Standing at the gazebo that overlooked the sea, lost in her own thoughts, was the X-Man known only as Rogue. She who had unwittingly awakened En Sabah Nur, and ultimately sent him to the farthest reaches of time and space. Another dimension she had been told. The whole concept just made her head hurt.

Now, as she stood looking out at the sunset, she had a chance to really reflect on everything that had happened recently. The battle itself she hadn't essentially taken part in, it had been the others who had been on the receiving end of the "Horsemen's" attack. It was hard for her to think of Storm and the Professor as two of the four Horsemen; she couldn't even begin to imagine how hard it must have been for the others to attack their friends and mentors.

Her part in it, however, had been the most important. She felt bad for having to absorb Dorian like that, he was just a little kid after all, but both he and his mother knew it was necessary.

'Ugh.' She rubbed her temples in an attempt to relieve the tension in her head. 'Ah need a year long vacation after this.' Turning back to the already fading sunset, Rogue let her mind wander to other things. It had been weeks since her little jaunt to New Orleans with a certain Cajun. She wondered what happened to him after they parted ways.

'Odd that he didn't make an appearance during the battle' she thought. 'He always seemed ready to leap into a fight.' She twirled a piece of her white bangs between her gloved fingers. 'Maybe he had "family business" to take care of, or something.' Not that she could be angry with him for not showing up, they hadn't made any effort to contact him either, with all the rushing around and suddenness of the event, it had been more of an after thought once the four main teams had been assembled.

'Still,' she thought with a smile. 'It would have been nice to see him again.'

Turning around, she began pacing around the gazebo. 'So where do we all go from here?' It was the question on everyone's mind. With Scott and Jean all finished with high school, they'll more than likely move on to college. She, Kitty, Kurt and the rest still had to attend Bayville high, much to their dismay, but after that, the sky's the limit really. She would probably stay with the X-Men, seeing as she really had no idea what she wanted to do with her life beyond the mansion.

'Whoa, when did my train of thought stop being morbid and turn into a positive outlook on life?" Rogue thought to herself yet again. Amazing, how saving the world can put one in a good mood.

Rogue lifted her head to watch the last of the sun sink into the horizon, taking all of natures' daytime beauty with it. Turning, she begins to make her way back to mansion, where she knows her friends are waiting for her.

In a few hours, a new day will dawn, and with it, a new era for mankind, human and mutant alike. The X-Men have put an end to one threat, but there will be others, and when that time does come, they shall be ready.

AN: well, there ya go. This could be viewed as a companion piece to "Smoke on the Water", seeing as I used lines from the same song as titles......hehehehe but you don't necessarily need to read one to "get" the other. I know I've probably made Rogue a little OOC, but if you've read my previous story, I think I made Gambit a little OOC too......oh well, artistic liscense, what can I say? It's a wonderful thing. I'm thinking of writing a story related to these first two....maybe even have it multi-chapter....ooooohhhh....scary! Anyhoo, hope ya liked what I've written, even though I think I write angst a lot better than happy feelings. Oh! And to those who did review my other story, thank you!! I was dancing around my dorm room like the crazy pineapple I am when I got them!! Yay!! ~Leishy
