Mekare was working at the ops console during the main shift.

She usually didn't work the main shift, but Ensign Harry Kim was on an away mission to a nearby alien space station to barter for spare parts. IT was practically a floating city, with ships of all sorts docked at every possible port, so it was a given that he would be gone for another few hours at least.

Mekare was trying to cut off the signal from a slave merchant's ship, who was also docked here, but he kept on changing frequencies, insisting that they merely peruse his stock.
Captain Janeway was getting flustered, trying vainly to explain to the ornery merchant that the Federation of United Planets did not believe in slavery.

"But Captain Janeway of the federation," the merchant would insist with a sly smile, "A woman obviously as busy as you could use a slave! Now take this jewel," he said, pulling a filthy specimen into view, "She comes from a far away system."
"Let me go, or I swear to Ares so help me, I'll rip your eyes out and make you eat them!" The dirty little female shrieked indignantly. She was obviously female. Her voice was much too shrill to be anything else.

She struggled ferociously against the large arms of two men who were obviously having a tough time keeping her subdued. As it was, they already had bruised faces and arms.
Mekare would not have bothered looking up from her console and task had the threat not been uttered in perfect, fluent Ancient Greek.

Mekare stoped what she was doing and gawked at the girl. She very nearly went in to a state of shock, for, against all odds in that vast galaxy they tended to call home... she recognized the girl under the dirt... it was a fellow Immortal.
Not only that, but it was Anic Panic, a fair weather friend from the late twentieth century.
Mekare gasped, not thinking it was too loud. Obviously it was because Janeway turned to face her with a raised eyebrow.

"What is it Ensign?"

Mekare licked her lips nervously and said slowly. "She... she's human."

Janeway sighed heavily, and turned back to the merchant, hands on hips. The merchant smiled, knowing he was about to make a sale.

Janeway pinched the bridge of her nose and glared the best she could at the grinning alien.

"How much?"
