Annie walked into her room. She threw her coat, and scarf on the bed. A chilly November wind blowed outside, and she was glad to be indoors. She sighed while sitting at her desk in the corner. Today was a long day at school, and now all she wanted to do was relax, well after she got her homework done anyway. She looked at the stack of mail that was un-opened that Molley had brought up to her. It had been sitting there for the past few weeks, piling higher, and higher.
She grabbed the pile and sorted through it. "Junk, Junk, Junk, Ju-what?" Annie opened the letter and read it. The words on the page sent chills up her spine. Who would send something like this? She looked at the envelope, but there was no name, no return address. Just her's. She re-read the letter, taking in every word.
"Annie,
I want you to know I'm on to you. Watch your back, don't go down any 'dark allies' too soon. I know what you did with the Talismen. You should no better than to mess with those, now you have to answer to me. Watch out.
-Your worst nightmare."
Annie sighed. "Jack, Clue, and Carrey." She smiled. "I'm gonna get those guys." She sighed while putting the letter back on the desk. She was still a little edgy, but she would be fine, right? She then opened up her algebra book. " 'X' plus 280, equals, 20, plus '2x' and '7x.' " She recited then started on the problem.
Thump...
"What is that?"
Thump... thump...
Annie got up from her chair and walked toward the door.
Thump... thump... thump...
She reached out for the door knob, and quickly opened the door. "AH-HA! I caught you!" She exclaimed while looking down the hall. Empty. "Jack? Carrey? Clue? Anyone?" She then closed the door tightly and walked back to the desk. She sat down and looked down at the algebra book, trying to concentrate. She felt a sudden chill and gasped. "GUYS! This isn't funny!" She said while walking over to the window. She closed it tightly and locked it. The chill of the wind still edged at her bones. What was going on? She looked out the window for any signs of the guys.
Thump, crash, thump.
Annie turned breathlessly toward her desk. The chair was in the floor, and some papers scattered around it. She sighed. Must have been the wind. She collected the papers and placed them on the desk. She then picked up the chair and sat down. She looked around the room, then back down at the book. A gasp tore from her lips. How did this get here? She picked up yet another letter, almost like the first. With trembling hands she opened it up and read it.
"Annie,
I'm watching you...
-Your worst nightmare."
She jumped at the sudden knock of the door and let out a yelp. The door swung open and in rushed Carrey. "Annie, are you allright?" He asked while looking at Annie's pale face.
"Yeah, fine. Uh, I just saw a mouse." She lied while shoving the two letters in the desk drawer.
"Mrs. P. wanted me to come and get you for dinner."
"Dinner, right." Annie smiled.
Carrey turned to leave, then turned back. "Are you sure your allright?"
"Perfect. Be down in a minute." She watched as Carrey left. She then grabbed the key to the drawer and locked it. That should take care of that.
She put the key in her pocket and walked down the stairs to the dining room for dinner. Whatever was going on, was nothing to be concerned about, was it?
To be continued...
