Holding Down the Fort

A/N: I don't think the Disney characters in Kingdom Hearts receive the attention they should here in the KH fandom. So, here's one for them.

Queen Minnie sat on King Mickey's throne, looking around the empty, white-stone throne room. It was quiet with everyone gone. Too quiet. She closed her eyes as they welled up with tears, and a downhearted sigh escaped her. The tears rolled down her cheeks, one, two, three…

A few moments later, she heard the throne room doors creak open and clicking footsteps on the floor. She looked up, surreptitiously wiping the tears from her face.

"Your Highness?" asked Daisy, Minnie's lady-in-waiting. "Is everything all right?"

"Oh, just fine," Minnie said, trying to mask the sadness in her voice.

Daisy's eyebrows furrowed and her head tipped to the side. "I beg your pardon, My Queen, but you don't look fine."

"Of course I do," Minnie insisted.

"I miss them, too," Daisy said with a sigh as heavy as Minnie's had been a few moments before. "It's lonely here without them."

Minnie sniffled, trying not to cry again.

"Oh, Your Highness," Daisy coaxed. "Cheer up. King Mickey will be back as soon as everything's all right. Have a little more faith in him."

"I have faith in him, Daisy," Minnie said. "But it's hard to tell my heart to wait when the only reason it keeps beating is for him."

"Well, I'm sure his heart is calling for yours, Your Highness," Daisy said, smiling. "And when the time is right, you'll be together again. I can't tell you how much I miss Donald sometimes, but I just think about when he'll be back and keep reaching for that day."

"Then that's what I'll do, too," Minnie replied, cheered by Daisy's enthusiasm. No one could ever stay gloomy around Daisy. "For now, we'll hold down the fort!"

Daisy giggled. "That's the spirit, Your Highness!"
