Addison walked into the lounge and his eyes lit up. Derek didn't say a word. Just being there was proof that he loved her. This day was a difficult day. They had both lost someone they loved. She wanted to forget. It wasn't suppose to be like this. Valentine's day was a day for loved ones to be united.
The pain she felt in her heart was obvious to him, for he felt it, too. Their eyes met and locked for several seconds. He smiled and she had tears in her eyes. She stood several feet away and he gestured her to join him. She hesitated, but, then slowly took cautious steps. He patted the space next to him, but she sat across facing him in the lone chair. They felt awkward towards each other. Silence was in the air.
He reached over, took her hand and squeezed it lightly. They knew it was a difficult time for the both of them. He caressed her face and she closed her eyes as a single tear fell down her cheek. Addison couldn't believe what was happening. He ruined the christmas holidays for her. But, at this time of the year she needed him as much as he needed her.
She waited patiently what his next move would be. Slowly, he reached into the pocket of his pants and pulled out a little box wrapped in a paper napkin which was decorated with red and pink hearts. A look of astonishment was written across her face as he handed it to her. He nodded. She delicately and carefully unwrapped it, although deep down she wanted desperately to ripe it open.
Inside was a piece of jewelry, a heart shaped silver pendant which was broken in half. A confused look appeared on her face. WIth his strong arms, he held onto her shoulders. He told her that he remembered the many valentines they had spent together. He knows the last one had been very difficult for the both of them. He said that Valentine's Day is suppose to be a day, a very special day for the people you love. She sat there bewildered, why then, is he with her. He reminisced of the fancy dinners and expensive gifts to each other. She had not expected anything from him. But, this gift he had chosen for her was something quite out of the ordinary.
The broken heart pendant was a symbolism of their love for the child they lost. Half of a half, he told her of his gift, joined together was the combined love they had for their baby. Life changed drastically soon after they suffered the lost of their little miracle. No one could ever take away the memories of the product of their love which they created together.
Addison cried, Derek comforted her, then gently kissed her lightly on the lips. He got up and headed towards the door. He turned and saw her clutch her half of the broken heart, pressing it against her chest, then quietly walked out leaving her alone.
Half of a half equaled what would have been one. A child of their own.
The End
