This oneshot is inspired by the song My immortal by Evanescence. I love the song, it's so beautiful and heartfelt. I wanted to write something inspired by that song for a long time, and now I've written this short story. I hope you like it.
"Gajeel, wake up. You're gonna be late for your training."
"Just five more minutes", he said without opening his eyes. He wanted to savor this moment a little bit longer. He felt the soft touch of a kiss on his cheek and reached out to pull her closer. But she wasn't there. She never was. Not anymore.
He opened his eyes and looked at the empty spot next to him. Where Levy used to sleep, where she used to wake up in the morning, where they used to….
They had had four years together. He still couldn't believe that she forgave him for what he did to her and her team mates in Shadow Gear. He still felt guilty about it. But she did forgive him. It all started when he saved her from Laxus' lightning. They started spending time together, he was her team mate on Tenrou. They became friends, and eventually they became lovers.
They had four years together. Then Levy got sick. She wasn't just sick, she was dying. There was no cure for her condition. Gajeel held her in his arms, he wiped away her tears when the pain was too much for her to bear. Not once did he allow himself to cry. He had to be strong for Levy, he had to be strong. He didn't cry when she took her last breath in the comfort of his loving arms. He didn't even cry on her funeral. He couldn't. There was no tears to cry. He was in too much pain to cry.
He didn't speak with anyone for weeks. The whole guild tried to visit him and talk to him, but he wouldn't let them. Even Jet and Droy came to his house, hoping to share the grief. He shut them all out.
Six months had passed. Gajeel could still hear her voice, he could still feel her touch. He wondered if he would ever get used to it, knowing that she was never really there. It was hard for him. Sometimes it made it a little easier, but other times it only made it worse. But no matter how bad he felt, he didn't want to be without it. It was like she was still there, watching over him, still loving him.
Gajeel walked to her grave for the first time since the funeral. He hadn't had the strength to go there. He couldn't stand watching the grave, reading the inscription on the heart shaped stone. Even now he averted his eyes from the words. Still not strong enough to read them.
"I'm glad you came. This doesn't have to be a sad place, you can come here to get comfort too."
Levy sat on top of the stone, watching him with all the love she felt for him sparkling in her eyes.
"There is no comfort in knowing that I can never be with you again."
Levy jumped down from the stone and walked up to him. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled his face closer to hers. She leaned her forehead against his and gave him a soft kiss on his lips.
"I will always be with you."
