AN- so this is my first thing I've posted in a while…..sorry…I'm not very good at writing on demand…or even writing down all of my thoughts. So I have this new one for ya… I had to do it for my English class and I got a decent mark so I thought maybe you might want to read it. Though I must warn you, it takes a dark twist near the end….and I keep switching verb tenses so bear with me on that….. Anyways here it is…..

The Discovery of Fortunato

"And down those stairs we have the extensive Montresor catacombs. We will be returning to those at the end of the tour," intoned the tour guide.

"What about the story of the cask of Amontillado? Will we see it?" I asked, my constant curiosity getting the better of me once again.

The only reason I had come here from Canada, my home, was because I had heard the many rumours of the Montresor crypt containing an extremely rare type and vintage of wine called Amontillado. I absolutely loved the idea of seeing such an old wine, as it was vintage in the 1800's, making it now over two hundred and ten years old. I'm not a connoisseur, but I am here with my friend who is very well known for his taste.

"Ah, I see you have heard about the cursed Amontillado. Who else is curious about the catacombs for this reason?" a dozen or so hands shot up, "Well then, let's go down twice, once now for the more eager and again later for everyone. Anyone who wishes to stay above for this first trip, wait here." The tour guide unlocked the rusty door and started into the darkness.

I was among the first to hurry forward and follow him, grabbing a torch on the way.

The descent was frightening and amazing, what with the cobwebs and the creepy lighting, it was exactly what you would expect of a crypt.

After about ten minutes of looking around, I stumbled upon what appeared to be a discarded cork and a half-empty bottle. Odd place to drink, I thought crouching down to inspect it closer, but I bet you would be the life of the party. Grinning to myself, I stood up, only to realize I was alone in the crypt.

"Hello!" I called out, only to hear my own voice echo back a hundred different times, "HELLO! Is anyone there!" I yelled again, starting to panic. All the answer I got was the slight drip of moisture from above as it plummets to the earthen floor. Suddenly I remembered that the guide said they were going to return later. All I had to do was wait here and they would be back. Then I remembered where here is and I simply couldn't sit still. I decided to explore, knowing that it could be hours before they returned.

As I walk deeper into the crypt, I have to crouch a little because of the lower ceilings and the cobwebs hanging from the damp roof. Eventually I see an end to the never-ending tunnel, a large square room with bones lining the walls.

Entranced, I meander around the room, until I notice something odd. A hole, just barely large enough to see through. Thinking of a secret stash of jewels or wine, I shine my flashlight into the crevice. At first I don't know what I see, and then I see chains attached to something white.

"No…it can be…" scared and unsure, I shine my light down a little so I can see more. A skull with a jester's cap smiles at me.

"AHH!" I shrieked, falling backwards onto the cold and uneven cobblestoned floor. I backpedalled into the wall, knocking the bones loose. The last thing I saw was the bells glinting in the dim light and I heard the slight jingling of bells. Then everything went black.

So how was it? Is it worth the wait from a very under-active author? Please tell me what you think! Reviews make writing so much easier! Oh and tell me if you think I should try to make an epilogue to this!
