When I was 5 years old, I lived in a foster home with two other kids. The parents were average, not too strict, not too lenient. For my 6th birthday, the Mum gave me a doll.

"Emma, it's your 6th birthday. For your birthday, I would like to give you something my Mother gave me when I turned your age," she pulled teh doll out of a box.

"This is a special doll. It has been passed down generations before myself,"

"How many?" I asked.

The Mum smiled.

"Enough generations for me to pass her on to you. Her name is Echo," the Mum said as she handed me the doll.

"That's her name?" I raised my eyebrows.

"Yes. When I was little, in the night when I was in bed, just before I went to sleep I'd sit Echo right in front of me and I would look at her. Sometmes I swear, I could see her thinking,"

"Thinking?"

"Echo is a special dol Emma, she can do things, strange things, interesting things. She's...magic,"

"I don't believe in magic," I said.

"Oh, you don't now, but just wait. The reason this doll is named Echo is because her voice used to echo against my bedroom walls. You see, she'd tell me things. If I was sad, she'd always make me feel better. If I was angry, she'd let me yell at her. Echo is going to be your dearest friend Emma. I do hope you take good care of her,"

"I will," I smiled at her.

That day was a long time ago. Here I was, lears later, staring at the same doll with the blonde hair and plastic green eyes. I heard footsteps behind me.

"Swan, what are you doing?" I smile and turned around.

Who is the one person that always called me by my last name.

"Just rummaging through some old things,"

"That video tape again? Swan the past was hard on you, you shouldn't keep revisitng it," Killian said, taking my hands in his.

"It;s not the video tape this time, I found an old toy," Killian raised an eyebrow.

"A doll, I said, showing him the box.

, "Does it have a name?" he asked, looking at me.

"Echo," I said, looking at him.

"Interestingg title for a blonde lass, when did you aquire her?"

"When I was 6, my foster Mom at the time, she gave her to me. Told me Echo was magic,"

"And did you believe her?"

"No. She told me she could hear Echo whispering things to her at night, things that would, well echo off the walls of her bedroom,"

"What made you keep her?"

"I'm not sure. Something must've happened that made me want to," I looked into the distance for merely a minute.

"A friend," I said.

"Swan?"

"When I was 6 I remember asking for a friend for my birthday. Sinec i never really made any at school. Echo became my best friend, someone I could trust, could count on,"

"Do you plan to keep her?"

"I want to give her to a kid who's never had the chance to make a friend, someone who needs one, deserves one,"

"Who do you have in mind?" I looked at Killian and smiled.

"I hoped we could give her to Lily, when she's born of course,"

"How do you know she won't make any friends at school?"

"I know she will. I just think, amybe she oculd use an extra friend, someone to talk to about all her worries. Someone who can be there for her when we're not around,"

"Love, I hate to dampen your spirit, but she is a doll,"

"I know. That's what makes her even more special,"

"You think she'll like Echo?"

I smiled at the doll, and somehow, I could see her smiling back.

"She'll love her,"
