"Why father had to chose me to come here? " Weiss muttered under her breath. 'Not that I mind coming to an orphanage, but coming just to represent him because of his donation...'
Weiss looked at her wristwatch and let out a sigh of relieve, finally the meeting with the staff was finishing and she could have a break to walk around and see how the children were doing.
"..Thank you for coming. If you wish, you can take a walk around the building to see the changes we've made." The director of the orphanage said. Everyone let a round of applause then stood and left.
Weiss looked around and decided to go to the outside area, where most of the kids were playing at. Almost there she felt something or rather someone hit her side. Using the wall to stead herself, she looked down. A kid was on the ground, looking up at her with big silver eyes, she stayed still, staring into those eyes 'This is the first time I see someone with silver eyes.' When she heard a low sob, breaking her from her thoughts, she shook her head and looked at the girl again. Her lips were trembling from trying to stay quiet.
In that moment, without thinking, she scoped the girl in her arms, cradling her head into her neck and shushing her.
"Shh..Do not cry. Everything is okay." She said while running her hands through the girl's hair, tiny hands gripping her jacket while her sobs subsided. It took a few minutes for her to calm down and then, all she could hear were soft sniffs. Weiss got some space between them and smiled.
"Can you tell me your name?"
The girl looked up, while using her hands to dry her eyes "R-Ruby." She said in a whisper, afraid that Weiss could be mad.
"Ruby..." she repeated.
"It's a beautiful name, I'm Weiss." she said smiling "Why were you running?"
Just as Weiss finished her question, one of the orphanage staff member appeared with a scowl in her face.
"Ruby Rose, I told you to stay put, it's so hard for you to understand?" The woman said exasperated.
Ruby stiffened in Weiss' arms and started to tremble slightly.
"Sorry for this and thank you Miss Schnee for holding her." She nodded in appreciation. "I'm surprised she's letting you hold her like this, seeing as she's always trying to run away." She said, still glaring at Ruby. "I'll take her now."
When Ruby heard that, she clung to Weiss as if her life depended on it. She didn't know why she felt so protective towards the girl in her arms, but she decided there, that she would take of her.
"It won't be necessary; I'm going to take her with me. Ask the director to send the papers and her belongings to my apartment. Have a good afternoon." She said in a stern voice.
The woman knew not to get in her way, so she went right away to the director's office.
"Ruby, sorry for doing that without asking you." She put the toddler down and crouched. "Do you want to come with me?" Weiss looked at her and was surprised when the girl opened a big smile and nodded happily. Giving one of her own, she stood up, Ruby grabbing at her jeans and both started to walk to Weiss car.
About two hours later, Weiss was parking her car in the garage. When she turned to tell Ruby they were there, she saw the girl sleeping in the back seat, wrapped in her jacket. She couldn't help the smile that took her face. She got out of the car, and as carefully as she could, she took the toddler in her arms, and went to the elevator, getting off on the 8th floor and into her apartment.
It was still a bit early, so she tucked the little one on her bed, and then went to take a shower.
She didn't take long in there and decided to work on some of the financial issues in her branch of the company. 'Tomorrow I'll take her out shopping and call Blake to help me with the papers for her adoption. Adoption... Who would think that, at 20, some little girl would make me feel like this. I'll have to tell Winter about tha-' her thoughts were interrupted by a loud cry.
Weiss stood up alarmed and ran to her room, to see Ruby crying her eyes out.
"Ruby!" She ran to the girl, who latched on her, her cries slowing down a bit when she felt the protective arms around her.
"What's wrong? Did you have a nightmare?" A nod on her shoulder was the answer. "Shh... you're safe now, I won't let anything get to you, I promise."
She laid down on the bed, with Ruby snuggled to her chest she pulled the covers over them.
"Now go back to sleep, I'll be here to chase the monster away." She whispered and within minutes, Ruby was breathing softly, her little hand fisted on her shirt and the other with a thumb on her mouth. Shortly after, Weiss fell asleep; with one hand securing the girls body on top of her and the other cradling her head.
