Chapter 1
Trish and I were walking in the school hallway. 6th period had just ended. We see Austin and Dez. I say, "Whatcha doing?" Dez answers nervously, "Nothing!" and runs off with Austin, who drops a paper in the process. Trish picks it up and reads it. "Ally, check this out," says Trish. The note says:
Meet us behind the school at 3:00 pm. We have something important
to tell you. A.s.a.p.!
Dallas and Elliot
I check my watch. "It's 2:45 now. If we run, we can beat them there and find out what's going on." "Perfect," says Trish, "Race you." "You're on!" I say already getting into position. I run faster than any girl in sixth grade. She's not even the fourth or fifth fastest. "1…2…"I count. "3!" And we set off.
When I arrive, (I won of course) I'm out of breath, my legs are in pain, and my caramel locks are starting to fall out of my ponytail. I adjust my hair and my clothes. I hear Trish's footsteps behind me. "No fair! You're smaller than me! Smaller people are always faster," she shouts. Did I mention I'm incredibly short? Yeah, well, I am. "Shhh!" I whisper, "I can see them." We look over the wall and find Dez, Austin, Dallas and Elliot talking. The dialogue of their conversation was this:
"Shouldn't we just tell them? I feel kind of guilty lying about it," Austin says with a wry face.
"Of course not. They'll just spread it around like the gossips they are," said Dallas in a matter-of-fact tone.
"They are not. Just book worms and royal pains," Dez said without looking up from playing Doodle Jump on his iPhone.
"Whatever. C'mon. The buses are going to leave us," says Elliot. They walk toward the buses in the opposite in which we came.
When they're gone, I begin to question their conversation. What was the important thing they were talking about? What people can't know about it? Was it us? I am awakened from my thoughts by Trish shaking my arm not-so-very lightly. "C'mon, we got to go, "she says. "OK,"I answer without even wanting to. We walk home without another word.
