Cato had attacked Glimmer, that girl from district one. I know he wasn't doing it on purpose; there was somthing in his eyes that told me otherwise. Cato isn't like this, he may be a career, but he doesn't enjoy hurting people, he never has and he never will.
At the reaping when he volunteered he didn't know I would be picked after that, no one planned for us to be in this arena together. But then they made the announcement that there could be two victors this year, if they were from the same district. I knew that everyone wanted Lover Boy and Fire Girl, but the rule change gave both of us hope nonetheless.
"Cato! Cato snap out of it!" I screamed at him franticly. Marvel and the tribute girl from 4 just stood there looking at us.
After a few minutes of this, of Glimmer doing her best to defend herself, of watching, of waiting, a cannon fired, and a picture of the little girl, Rue I think her name was, from 11 flashed through the sky. The sound of the cannon seemed to snap Cato out of it; he fell to his knees and started shivering. Marvel ran over to Glimmer and helped her up. "You guys go and hide, I need to talk to Cato. Alone," I said. They left and I walked over and knelt next to my trembling friend.
"Cato, are you alright Sweetheart?" I murmured, stroking his hair. I've known Cato forever, he's my best friend, and I love him to death. We trained together at the academy, always trying to get the best of one another. Cato almost always won, of course, because he's a year older than I am and has had a few extra years of practice. But don't underestimate me, I 'graduated' second in our class, only Cato beat me out of first.
He shook his head ever so slightly, "I-I can't d-do it Clove," he stammered, voice cracking. I've never seen him this broken up, ever.
I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and he hid his face in my hair, he was still shaking, as if he were cold, but it was the middle of the day here in the arena and the game makers had it almost as hot as it could get without killing us. "Shh, it's alright, I've got you," I whispered in his ear.
We stood there in the middle of everything, holding each other. I looked up at Cato, who kept his arms around me as I did. His pale blue eyes were the color that the sky usually is in 2, and I immediately got homesick. But then I snapped out of it and realized that he was choking back tears. This isn't normal, not for Cato. He's the strongest person I've ever met and the only person who can ever comfort me.
