Trust

Edmund trusted his brother, has always trusted his brother, has since the Witch, before the Witch even, since he was a small child looking to Peter for guidance. In the years before the Professor's house, before the Witch, before Narnia, he had lost that somewhere, lost it in the myraid of anger and loss and pain. In that time he had not remembered that he could trust. Ultimatley, Edmund often thinks, this is what led to his downfall with the witch.

The Witch. She broke him. Promised him power greater than anything he had ever known and he had taken it. For what amounted to a snack, he had betrayed his siblings to Her. He had done it knowingly and willingly. Oh, sure, he hadn't known She would kill them, but he had known he was betraying them, had left them to give up their location to Her. He had known. He had sat on her throne, only for a moment, but still on it and seen the whole land of Narnia bowing at his feet. Then he had found himself dragged into the cold, icy dungeons and for the first time in a long time, he found himself sorry for another creature. She had punished him, and hit him, and taken from him everything.

Then, at the last moment, he had been rescued, brought before Asan. Aslan who breathed on him and showed him trust and warmth, love and forgiveness, strength and power, justice and bravery. And Edmund had come back to himself, or more truly, found that which he had never been able to truly keep before. And once again Edmund fully trusted his brother.

Edmund had trusted his brother since then with unwavering faithfullness. Throughout battles and raids, pirate attacks and diplomatic journeys, through everything Edmund trusted Peter.

Even when they went back to England and Peter's temper, fiery and violent, began to reign in place of the real Peter, the Peter Edmund had come to know so well in Narnia. Edmund had understood, and acted accordingly to temper Peter's moods with his own faith and fought for his brother, with his brother, whenever he could.

Their friendship suffered though, for all Edmund tried to keep it from doing so. Peter was moody, angry, agressive, at the best of times in England. Peter's bouts of moodiness were taken out on those around him, and being always at hand as to ease some of Peter's suffering, Edmund was the one who bore the brunt of many of Peter's explosions.

He bore them unflinchingly, and with unfailingly good grace, no matter how much they really hurt him.

Through all of it Edmund retained his trust in Peter. Trusting Peter to break out of this... whatever it was and back to being his Peter.

When they returned to Narnia, contrary to what Edmund had hoped, believed, prayed, Peter was even worse. But Edmund trusted his brother, and for that reason, and that reason alone, Edmund went along with the idea of the raid.

Because Edmund trusted Peter, and Edmund would stand by Peter's side through no matter the situation.

Finis.
