Some may say that dancing around on a stage in nothing but your skivvies sounds terrifying. That singing songs about monsters with blond hair and a tan sounds weird. Even the sight of a man in makeup make some recoil in horror, but to me; it's my life. My name is Darrien and my life revolves around The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I don't care that some people associate it with homosexuality; it's the reason I'm still alive and still standing to this day.
I saw Rocky Horror Picture Show on November 17, 2011. I had known about it before, but never gotten a chance to watch because of my family's strict rules. When I finally got a chance to see it, I was all eyes, ears, and vocal chords (some songs I already knew because of Glee). The second the last note of "Science Fiction Double Feature: Reprise" played, I paused the movie, exited the menu, made a bowl of popcorn and vowed to watch it over and over until I hated every single thing about it. I watched Rocky at least 18 times before it was deleted from the DVR.
My favorite lines from the movie are "There's a light in the darkness of everybody's life" from Over at the Frankenstein Place and "Don't dream it. Be it" from Rose Tint My World. Those lines serve as an inspiration for me. When the going gets tough and things aren't going right, Brad, Janet, and Frank sing those words and keep my heart filled with hope and a love for life. Instead of running to razors, I choke back my tears, throw a feather boa around my neck, and sing until my lungs cry out for mercy. Sometimes, I even experiment with character makeup.
Some people are committed to a god or a band, but I'm committed to a rock-n-roll musical about all the things that could possibly go wrong on a cold stormy night in November. Hopefully, one day, I'll get to do what I love and not get criticized or looked down on for it. One day I won't have to dream it, because I'll be
