"What can you give someone who has it all?" the brunette General wondered while walking around his chamber. Alexander's birthday was the following day and he had not found the right present to give him.

* "A plot of land?" when his empire reaches up to the further Asian lands.

* "Jewels and gold?" when his chests are full of them , not only obtained as spoils of war but also as gifts from friends and some defeated foes.

* "Silk cloth?" when the most skilled women's hands weave his robes and embroider them with intricate designs.

* "A delicious new dish?" when the best cooks of all the lands he owns cook for him whatever he desires.

* "An exotic drink?" when his lands provide him with the sweetest varieties of nectar he could wish.

* "Immortality?" I am not a god so I cannot give it to him, but thinking it better, when your name is said aloud by thousands and it will be surely remembered forever, isn't it a kind of immortality in itself?

The poor brunette continued with his musings but not a single solution came to his troubled mind.

The following day came sooner than the brunette had desired and he looked at the rest of his companions offering their king the most amazing gifts for his birthday. He also spotted the thankful look in his king's two-coloured eyes when he accepted them one by one but Hephaestion realized that there was still something missing in the royal gaze.

People started to look a bit frantic as Hephaestion approached his king; they could clearly see that the man had nothing in his hands and that his attire was the simplest he could have found in his many chests and among his treasures. The slender but muscled young body was clad in a short white chiton that reached up to his milky thighs and his upper part left a shoulder uncovered, tightly grabbed by a gold pin; worn and comfortable leather sandals adorned his big feet and the straps hugged the strong calves. A half rustic wooden pendant, hanging from a brown leather cord, rested upon his chest and his front long bronze tresses were combed in two thin plaits that met in the back of his head and tied with a blue deep thin cord.

Nobody could understand what the young General was doing but many of the companions, two or three specifically, were waiting for the young king's outburst; everybody knew how Alexander loved getting presents and being smothered with attentions.

However, Hephaestion stood in front of his king as tall as one of his bridges pillars; his calm eyes were as blue as the Aegean Sea, a soft smile, as warm as a spring day, graced his velvety lips.

He opened his mouth and let the baritone voice be listened all over the Throne room.

"My king, I have only myself to offer and my heart that has been yours since the moment we met"

… and saying that, he casted his eyes down, fixing his stare onto the marble floor.

Nobody moved inside the room, silence was the only sound until Alexander left his throne and stood in front of Hephaestion. He gently tipped the brunette's chin up and taking the slender hands between his slightly bigger ones, he lifted them to his mouth and kissed them reverently.

"Thank you for the best present of all" and leaning forward, he kissed Hephaestion on the lips and everybody could at that moment see that the king's eyes wore a singular sparkle in them.
