The Ghost of You and Me

The Ghost of You and Me

The newly fallen snow crunched softly under Takiko's feet as she walked slowly through the camp. She was sure that she was the only one awake so late at night. A cold breeze shook the last of the leaves from the bare trees that surrounded their campsite.

Takiko-sama? Is that you?

Takiko was surprised to see the man by the fire. She walked over to the glowing flames and sat next to him, placing a cold hand on his. You can't sleep either?

No, Takiko-sama, I'm keeping watch. The irony of that did not escape Takiko, a blind man keeping watch; but then again Urumiya could see' things that the others couldn't, and probably didn't want to. A long strip of dark blue cloth was wrapped around his eyes, hiding them from the world. Somehow, despite that, Takiko thought Urumiya was rather handsome. She was nervous the first time she saw himthe first time he smiled at her. Sometimes, she still felt those same butterflies in her stomach when she talked to him.

Urumiya took her hand and brought it up to his lips, kissing it softly. Why can't you sleep, miko-sama?

I'm afraid.

Of what? Urumiya gently pulled her closer to him. The fourteen-year-old hesitated for answering. Of summoning Genbu. Of Kutou. What—What if I can't do it?

Of course you'll be able to do it. Everyone has faith in you. The one who loves you has faith in you.

You have faith in me? she looked up at him, at his mouth.

Of course I do, Takiko-sama. You know I do. A smile slowly made it's way across the man's mouth.

I'm glad then. Those same butterflies came back but Takiko felt that she needed to say this. If the one I love has faith in me then I won't be scared. I'll do it for him. Urumiya took her delicate hands in his and rubbed them slowly to bring warmth to her.

Then it is alright, Takiko-sama.

When the fire faded to the soft glow of a few embers, Takiko was no longer there. Urumiya sat, unseeing, in front of the remains of the fire. Miko-samamy loveI wish that I could be there to see you succeed. Already, though, my future has been ordained and my time draws near. A quiet sigh escaped the blind man's lips.

Watching the candle flicker out
In the evening glow
I can't let go
When will the night be over

I didn't mean to fall in love with you
And baby there's a name
For what you put me through
It isn't love, it's robbery
I'm sleeping with the ghost of you and me.

Author's notes: Yep, I'm a weirdo conformist punk for using this song but hey, it fit I thought. R&R please?
