I wonder what you'll take from me today
Sanity or just my breath away
It's hard to say
Impossible for me to tell
We're always walking on eggshells
Who you're going to be from day to day today

Cedric Diggory couldn't take it anymore. He always had to uphold his pretty-boy reputation. For once, he just wanted to do something totally different, totally un-Cedric. He was going insane, especially with Cho Chang, his girlfriend, breathing down his back. She honestly thought he was the one for her. She hadn't even dated anyone besides him, and she was too possessive. He missed the days when they were just friends, best friends. The only reason he went out with her was because his parents thought he should.

I wish that we could go back
To what we were before
But I don't think that I love you anymore, anymore

He remembered the good old days when they could talk and laugh about anything, when they didn't care about their looks or their reputations.

Wonder why it is that you don't see
What you've changed since we first met
And how much that is killing me
I know that I will always miss
The butterflies of our first kiss
And how you use to smile so easily

Still, things had changed, Cho had changed. She wasn't the girl he could joke around with anymore. She became quite conceited and snobby. Sometimes he even wondered why he even wanted her as his girlfriend in the first place. He used to treat each kiss they shared as a novelty, but how could he do that now, when every beautiful smile was changed into a selfish smirk.

I wish that we could go back
To what we were before
But I don't think that I love you anymore, anymore

He didn't need her like he used to, want her like he used to. He didn't love her like he used to. Not even as a friend, because his Cho was gone. In her place was a complete stranger. She started pushing him away, but she pushed him into someone who'd change his life forever.

It's too hard to keep pretending
It's too hard to ignore
But I don't think that I love you anymore, anymore

Hermione Granger was different. He'd met her one day in the library, when he'd been hiding from Cho. Sure, they'd met at the Quidditch World Cup, but this was different. Their conversation that day was filled with sarcasm, snarky comments, pleasant jokes, and hearty laughs. She challenged him in every way, something that Cho didn't have the guts to do. He really liked this feisty Gryffindor and the many sides of her. As their meetings and conversations became more frequent, Cedric knew what he had to do.

I'm sorry, I'm sorry
I never thought that it will come to this
I know we'll never get back
To how we were before
Cuz I know that I don't love you anymore

Everyone knew that he was going to break up with Cho. Everyone, that is, except Cho, herself, and Hermione. That's why Hermione looked on with water-filled eyes as Cedric and Cho shouted at each other. As Cedric told Cho exactly why he was breaking up with her, his eyes never left those of the girl who'd stolen his heart. He knew people would disapprove and he knew people would talk behind their backs, but for once Cedric felt like he was finally being his true self, not the person people wanted him to be.

It's too hard to keep pretending
It's too hard to ignore
But I know that I don't love you anymore, anymore

He didn't love Cho Chang anymore, but that was okay. It was okay because he knew he'd finally have someone who'd stand beside the real him. When he kissed Hermione right in front of everybody, he knew that things would be different from then on. He loved the little know-it-all.

I'm sorry...

He was sorry that he lost his best friend. He was sorry that it was, partially, his fault that a caring person morphed into a selfish one. He was sorry that he'd hurt a lost girl's feelings.

He wasn't sorry that he'd fallen in love with Hermione Granger.
