Monsters of the Night

Ominous and present,
they crawl out into the night,
snatching her away
from her restful slumber.

They dine on her losses,
her fears and her happiness.
She is lost from reality;
She has sunken, deep,
into the chasm of nightmares.

She cannot wake;
She cannot shut her eyes.
She sees them,
the people: family, friends,
allies and the dead she had seen.

The blood upon their bodies
and their faces with those lifeless eyes.
They haunt her,
calling her with their screams
and then she weeps, begging, pleading
for all of it to go away.

They would not let her
and she is forced to see
again and again
as the monsters of the night
take her further and further
into the black abyss.

Then she screams awake
terrified and alone, vulnerable.
She cannot hope to sleep again.

Author's Notes: This is the first poem I've written for The Hunger Games and I know it's quite dark and scary and sad, but it's one that popped into my head when I decided to write a poem. I'm really proud of it and I think it embodies how truly scary a nightmare could be for Katniss.

Forever thank you that you've read this,
Patty.
