A Moment In Time
Things didn't go well after the defeat of Voldemort.
He was gone, and yet, the damage he'd wrought was complete.
The muggles found magic within a year.
Global warfare.
Witch burnings were taken back up.
People died, both magic and muggle.
People hid, both magic and muggle.
Harry knew he couldn't sit back and watch it happen. He was their hero, as much as he didn't want to be, and people were looking to him for a solution.
He had to fix the mess he'd created, but he didn't know how to do so. To go back in time with easily managed, with the help of the unspeakables. They could send him to a pinpointed moment in time without breaking a sweat.
But when did he go?
Did he go back to when Voldemort was defeated the first time, search out the Horcruxes, kill him before he had chance to regain his body?
Did he go back to his fourth year, tell Albus what was going to happen, defeat Voldemort at his rebirth?
Did he go back further, to Tom Riddle's childhood, and take a chance to stop Voldemort ever existing?
Opinions and options were thrown around by the Order, each of them differing. Arguments, fights, sulks and tantrums were prevalent for weeks, until Harry was done with all of it.
With his wand in hand and his cloak covering him, he snuck from the secure house and apparated to the Ministry. The Unspeakables were awaiting him, apparently knowing that he would decide to go it alone.
"Have you decided on the moment in time you would like to return too?" one asked, his hood blocking his identity.
Harry swallowed hard but nodded, his decision made. He was handed a device, a mangled looking time turner. Frowning at the unspeakable, he raised his eyebrow in question.
"It works much in the way of the time turner, only it is one use only because it takes you back further, much further. A time turner deals in hours only, this works in years, months, weeks, days, minutes. You must know exactly the moment you wish to go to, and you must understand that there is no way back.
"You will be completely changing the fabric of time, Mr Potter. You must be very careful."
Harry nodded, swallowing nervously once again.
Keeping the time in his mind, he pressed the button the Unspeakable pointed out.
The sensation was of a really rough portkey, and as Harry landed, he instantly vomited up the contents of his stomach. He couldn't help but be happy that it was one way and one use only. He really didn't relish the idea of a repeat performance.
Looking around himself, he realised he'd appeared in muggle London. Transfiguring his clothes to match the times, he put his cloak and wand away and stepped out into the hustle of bodies.
Walking around, he finally found what he'd been looking for.
A newspaper stand. On the top was the date.
Harry stared at it for long moments. He'd actually done it.
Now he could only hope that Hermione had been correct that Tom Riddle could be saved if only he was shown what a good life could be. If he was shown love and affection.
Harry thought about everything he had to do before he could start his plan. First though, he bought a paper, smiling at the seller.
He knew he'd keep this paper forever. He looked at the date again and shook his head. He could only pray that he didn't balls it all up.
August 1st, 1943.
