Wind Beneath My Wings
Did you ever know that you're my hero
And everything I would like to be
I can fly higher than an eagle
For you are the wind beneath my wings
-Wind Beneath My Wings
What had changed her? For her, it was that first meeting with Galinda. Of course, she hadn't liked the blonde from the start; the girl was far too bubbly for her liking, and far too… different to how Elphaba was. Galinda went out of her way to be nasty to the green girl, and Elphaba had retaliated in kind, mocking the blonde at every opportunity.
Gradually, a friendship had grown. She'd never have thought that friendship would come to her at university in any form, but if someone had told her that she would find the person who would mean more to her than anything at said university, she would have laughed in her face. Friendship just didn't come to people like her. Mocked, ridiculed and bullied throughout her youth, she had given up on even the thought of having a friend like Galinda.
Galinda changed her name to Glinda. Although the act was done to show off to the boy she was in love with, it still meant a lot to Elphaba. She had done it to show her support of Elphaba's campaign against Animal cruelty as well, and Elphaba knew it.
That day in the Emerald City had formed a final bond to the friendship that would last the girls a lifetime. They did nothing life changing, but simply spent the day laughing together and sharing what would be their final happy day as friends.
One day, both girls would look back on this day and remember a day where both were carefree and happy, with no responsibilities. The day after was quite different.
The girls' paths would split, and each would take the path that they thought was the right one. Elphaba, inevitably, took the dangerous path, and this would make her fall.
But for now she was flying. She knew that Glinda was supporting her, and subtly, was trying to prevent the Wizard from capturing her. Foolish as the blonde was, she set a lot by friendship, and the idea of betraying Elphaba was too much for her.
So in those first years of Elphaba's flight from the Wizard, Glinda was her invisible support. They had no contact, but just the memories that Elphaba held dear to her heart were enough to keep her going. Maybe, if she fought hard enough, there would be a better Oz, with room to be friends with people like Glinda.
And Glinda, for her part, always did support Elphaba in what she did. When speaking to the Wizard about her, she always took her friend's part, sticking up for and defending the girl she had learned to like. They were the very best of friends, the Good Witch of the North and the Wicked Witch of the West.
For you are the wind beneath my wings…
