Call the Midwife - Timothy Turner. I don't own Call The Midwife, it belongs to Heidi Thomas McGann and the BBC.

Timothy sat in silence, staring at the wall ahead of him as he waited for his father to return. His mind was replaying the events of the night before last when his father had returned home alone after taking Shelagh to the hospital to see his friend.

His dad had come home silent, looking miserable, and Timothy's heart had stopped. He had not been told the reason for the appointment, only that there was one, and seeing his dad alone had sent him back to over two years before when his mother had died. Then Shelagh hadn't returned, and Timothy had feared the worst. In a hastily cooked meal, not nearly as good as Shelagh's usual feasts, his dad had explained briefly in between mouthfuls the reason for Shelagh's appointment, and the eventual diagnosis. He had added that Shelagh had asked him to tell Tim, as she had to remain in hospital and wanted him to know the reason why.

Tim had been more upset than he had wanted to show at the thought that he might never get a biological sibling, but he had hidden it well. He knew that Shelagh must be devastated, and as his father had told him the night before over quickly bought fish and chips that he would be bringing Shelagh back after work that evening, Tim had walked home from school as quickly as he could in his braces to ensure that he'd be home to greet her.

So here he was, waiting. He had been sitting for over half an hour, alone, in their sitting room. Finally he heard his dads car draw up on the kerb outside, and watched through the window as his dad left the car and went to open the passenger door for Shelagh.

He watched as his stepmother eased herself out of the car, walking as a tired old lady would, and he watched as she reentered the house, nothing like the vibrant, happy young woman who had filled it with happiness over the past few months.

He remained sitting until his dad and Shelagh entered the room, but one look at Shelagh had him standing up and blindly walking into her arms. Tim had thought that he'd be a support for her, but one look at her sad face and the thoughts he'd been having over the past two days about never having a sibling and Shelagh's heartbreak had come flooding to the surface, upsetting him more than he thought possible.

He felt Shelagh's arms wrap around him as well, both drawing comfort from each other's embrace.

Eventually, she released him and he stepped back without letting go of her arms. "Missed you", he heard her say. He smiled. "Missed you too", Tim replied, pretending not to notice the tears in her eyes as she smiled warmly at him.

He held her hands in his, watching as his beloved stepmother smiled wanly at his dad.

They would be ok eventually, Tim decided, he would make sure of it. He'd be there to hug Shelagh as much as possible in the future, and if need be, Tim grinned inwardly to himself, he'd go and find Carole. Everybody loved Carole, and though he thought that her adoptive parents wouldn't be too happy if he turned up on the doorstep and took her away, he'd do it, he'd do anything, if it would make his stepmother happy again.

A/N this is my first time writing for CTM, so I've tried to do the characters and the situation justice. I hope I have. So upset last night!
