It was wonderfully calm and utterly terrifying at the same time.

Completely alone and shivering from the frigid waters that clung to my clothes I stared up at the dark sky. It was beautiful. Distant stars looking down upon an ever more distant sea. Puffs of white breath coming from my mouth alerted me that I was in fact still alive. I bit my lip and stilled my breath. This was not the moment to share my existence with others.

The ship had sailed into mermaid waters and everyone aboard found that the legends and stories were true. Luckily, I hid away in a lifeboat as the ship was sunk. No others had been as lucky as I. Hoping and praying that the boat would drift away was my only chance.

Seconds.

Minutes.

Hours.

I opened my eyes knowing it had not been long enough for me possibly to be out of harm's way and mermaids reach. The same stars looked down gently.

Beautiful.

Calm, still waters did not betray the danger just below the surface. Wonderfully calm. I didn't know if I was to start singing softly or sobbing. Death was surely lurking near.

A shaky breath escaped my mouth. That's when I noticed her. A beautiful girl clung to the edge of the boat. Her arms folded neatly over the side, a kind of girl that I would have wanted to look like when I was older, if only she were human. She had pale, creamy skin, light blue eyes, and fair colored hair.

Sitting up slowly I wiped away a few tears. I didn't want to die but I wouldn't cry. She stared at me, looking me from head to toe through her eyelashes. Painfully slowly, she let go of the edge of the boat and sunk back down into the waters her eyes the only thing visible. A trick perhaps to make me think I was free. After a few more moments, she raised her chin above the water.

"Go." Her voice was husky, seductive. I made no move, too afraid and frozen to think that I could survive.

"Go." This time she commanded me and her eyes flashed with anger. I quickly grabbed an oar and slipped it into the water never taking my eyes off of her. "Get far away from here, girl. Never return if you wish to live." I paddled as fast as I could.

Seconds.

Minutes.

Hours.

Out of harm's way now and mermaids reach, I looked back up at the sky.

The same stars looked down and beamed at me.

Beautiful and calm.
