John never met Mary, and therefore he had never married her. When Sherlock announced that he was dating a woman named Jeanine it had broke his heart. How could Sherlock be so daft? How could Sherlock Holmes not have realized something that was slapping him in the face, for one? That John Hamish Watson was in love with him?
John slowly became more independent and withdrawn from Sherlock. He still loved him, of course. Feeling like that can not diminish just from being unrequited. He still went on cases, he loved the thrill, the rush, so much that he couldn't just quit. And Sherlock would surely notice, the clever bastard that he was.
When Sherlock had told John that he didn't love Jeanine and only dated her to get to Magnussen, John was ecstatic. He didn't show it though. He had learnt early on not to show your feelings when it came to Sherlock Holmes. He didn't even bat an eye, John knew that if he did Sherlock would know. Sherlock would know that John wished so damn bad that Ms. Hudson was right, and that Sherlock Holmes was his boyfriend.
