She didn't know what she could say or do to make it better. She didn't know what steps needed to taken to effectively reverse it.

She didn't know how to fix it.

And it was killing her inside.

Sam watched from an observation room at Area 51 as doctors and scientists alike struggled to deprogram Barrett. The interrogation was harsh. The need to break him was cruel. But there was no other way.

He had to come to terms with what had happened. They had to know if Ba'al had instructed him to do more.

The worst part was that he knew. His hard gaze passed over the heads of the interrogators, cutting right through the window to where she was standing. In his eyes, she saw the anger, the pain, the sadness, and the betrayal.

Nightmarish flashes of Martouf assaulted her, bringing her back to another time and place, reminding her of the dangers of her affections, of getting too close.

Sam wished it could be different. She wished it could be different in so many ways.
