*gasps* look at me, writing a het fic!
Yeah, that doesn't happen often. But this idea popped into my head after a conversation I had with my mother the other day, and I couldn't help but write it. This isn't set in modern day times, just to let you know. Definitely a few decades back.
Please review, and constructive criticism is loved. I always want to improve my writing, and the only way to do that is to know what I need to fix!
Everything She'd Been Told She Wanted
Alice was happy.
That was her mantra. The words she repeated to herself, quietly, mumbled during dinner, prayed during church, whispered in the dead of night and carried by her breath as it fanned across her husband's skin.
I am happy, I am happy, I am happy.
She had what she wanted. She had what every little girl dreamed of, what every little girl was told was their future. She had a nice big house, with a nice handsome husband, nice pretty clothes, three nice darling children whom she loved with all her heart. Yes, Alice was happy. She had gotten what she had been told she wanted.
The tears came unbidden and unwanted, streaming out of her eyes with far too much ease.
No one had ever told her it would be like this. No one had told her about the fighting, the screaming, the taxes, the cleaning, the hard work of being a stay-at-home mother with three kids and too much money but not enough time. No one had warned her that her husband would come home smelling of other lovers and she'd just smile and reheat dinner, rather than upset the children, or worse, Alfred. After all, it wasn't like they could get a divorce, or anything. God knows what it would do to Alfred's reputation to have his pretty little British trophy wife up and leave him.
Alice had brought up divorce to one of her friends, long ago. Told her that she couldn't take it anymore. She had said that she didn't even remember why she'd married the man, but deep down, she knew. He had been rich, handsome, and found her pretty. Everything they'd told her she wanted.
Of course, Daisy didn't understand. Daisy had gasped, hands flying to her mouth, errant curl standing straight up in shock and reddish hair twisting around a dainty face, Daisy's entire body showing her horror. But what about the kids? She had asked. Don't be so silly, Alice! You can't survive without a husband, where will you get money, how will you feed your children? Little Oliver is already so sickly, can you imagine the damage losing a parent would do to him? You're a smart girl, don't do this to yourself!
If Alice was a smart girl, why couldn't she handle being on her own? If she was a smart girl, why couldn't she apply for a job and raise her kids alone? If Alice was a smart girl, then why didn't she pack her bags and leave today?
Alice had been told she was happy. So why couldn't she believe it?
