It was a nice spring afternoon. The leaves were blowing gently in the wind. Another perfect day for a person who loves being outside. The warm breeze was thick with welcoming hope for the pessimistic. For Katherine Beckett it was the anniversary of the most devastating day from her early adulthood.

She always requested this day off from work. Captain Montgomery never denied her this wish because he knew the reason.

Beckett dreaded this day every year. There was no reason to be happy on this day. Sitting at home and watching old movies, was what she usually did. After all the years of never ending tears over food and movies, she decided today was the day.

Driving to the cemetery felt like it took hours. In reality it was only twenty minutes. When Beckett parked her car near the familiar gravestone anxiety warmed over her. Her hands were shaking when she took the keys out of the ignition. Courage was slowly draining from her body. This was the hardest thing she brought herself to do in years. Seeing gruesome murder scenes was not as difficult as this step.

Beckett closed her eyes and slowly opened her car door. She grabbed the flowers she bought at a local florist. Purple, red and yellow flowers. They consisted of tulips, lilacs and petunias. Three of her mom's favorite colors and flowers. The smell of them reminded Beckett of their living room when she was growing up. Her mom always had beautiful flowers on side tables for decoration.

Beckett stepped out of her car slowly. If only it was another day she would have noticed how beautiful the weather was. She could see the burial site from where she was standing. While nodding her head and licking her lips, she slowly made her way over.

Her mom's gravestone was as beautiful as it was made many years ago. Johanna Beckett's name ran across the glimmering stone.

Beckett knelt down in front of her mom's grave. She placed her hand on top of the stone and hung her head low. Warm tears started to form in her eyes. She didn't try to fight them, she just let them drip onto the ground and into the soil.

She missed her mom so much. If only she knew who murdered her, she would make sure get the worst legal treatment.

Beckett laid the flowers on the ground and sat down in front of them. Her mascara was running, but she didn't care. Tears slowly kept flowing down her cheeks. She looked up at the beautiful blue sky.

"I love you mom." she whispered as her heart began to ache.
