Toast

Tohru heard a 'poof' and then a sharp intake of breath.

Two minutes later, her hand landed on a soft patch of fur, and she yelped, drawing back in surprise.

Yuki stood in the middle of two apples, some coarse celery, and a handful of almonds. Half of the toast had been lost to the inside of their toaster, and when Yuki tried to reach for it, one of the apples tumbled away from him and onto the floor.

"Honda-san," he said, wringing his two paws together. "I'm sorry. You've been busy recently, and I was going to make this for you." He pointed to the toast.

"Ah, Yuki-kun!" said Tohru. "I didn't notice! I was just looking around for you, and I should have seen--"

"Don't worry, Honda-san." With the edge of his tiny paws, he pushed the blackened toast towards her. "Is this okay?" Tohru blinked: the tabletop was covered with fruit rinds, the toast was smothered in butter. The entire kitchen would have to be cleaned again.

Then she saw the quaver in his serious black eyes.

"It's perfect." She took the toast from him, and smiled.
