Disclaimer: I don't own Kingdom Hearts. The words in italics are thoughts, the quote in bold is taken from Sora's story in Chain of Memories.

He couldn't move. He couldn't talk. He couldn't breathe. He realized, with a frightening jolt of the heart, he no longer needed to breath. Everything was fading away. What was happening?

You're dying, a voice in the back of his mind said calmly, like it was an everyday thing to die. Why do you think you can't move? Why you can't talk any more? Why you can barely see?

Pictures formed in his mind, like he was watching the end of his last fight with Riku as a slideshow. The show of his weakness was bad enough, but then…

After that last blow, his body faded into nothing. His mind was numbed by that image.

But why…why am I still here, if my body is already gone…?

Already the world was beginning to fall away from him. Everything was going white. So he really was dying…why did it scare him so much? Hadn't he wanted to die, ever since he found out he wasn't real and never would be?

He was a creation of unwanted things. Everything about him was borrowed, and it hurt.

At that thought, memories swirled through his mind like shards of glass on the wind, memories of a girl with hair like sunshine and a broken smile.

Naminé. She had broken his chain of memories, torn apart his heart so easily. She had stopped him because he was going to hurt Sora, even though everything he had done was for her. She was the source of all his pain in some way or another.

So why was he thinking about her now, of all times?

"But there's one thing you can't take from me anyway...even if it is a lie! I will protect Naminé. Phantom promise or not, it's MY promise!"

Unbidden, a memory of him standing before her, standing against Marluxia and pledging to protect her, flashed in his mind. He had made that promise even knowing what Naminé had done to him. The yearning to just let go of his anger and hatred nudged him, telling him to forgive and forget.

But he had had enough of empty promises. He shoved the memory away.

I'm sorry Naminé…but it just wasn't meant to be. I shouldn't have made a promise I couldn't keep. I hope you find someone who can protect you, because I can't do it anymore…

And then there were no more thoughts, no more feelings, no more memories. He was nothing instead of nobody…like he should have been from the start.
