A Moment

For a moment, Richard had been scared. Not to say that he hadn't been scared before, but not like that. For a moment he had been scared of losing Kahlan.

The fight had been routine. They had run across a couple of bandits. Zedd hadn't even bothered trying to help. He'd gotten a pear out of his pack and leaned against a tree to watch the fight.

Richard, Kahlan, and Cara had stood in a line as the bandits rushed at them. Kahlan had looked over to him. It was a ritual that they had established. A wordless goodbye incase something went fatally wrong. The look of love was strong in Kahlan's eyes as she stared at him for a second that seemed like eternity.

That's when her gaze had shifted to Cara and Richard could see the same intense feeling of love in her eyes. That's when Richard's fear had begun.

There was a moment when Richard noticed how closely Cara's fighting style had come to resemble Kahlan's. When he noticed how Kahlan had become subtly more aggressive when in battle. How their hair seemed to twirl in a similar pattern. There was a moment when Richard noticed how they seemed to gravitate towards each other.

Leaving Richard alone.

There was a moment he noticed the ax swinging towards his head. He had ducked, not noticing until after the fight that he was losing blood. He was too preoccupied with his newfound discovery.

And when the fight was over, there was a moment when Richard feared Kahlan would rush to Cara's side to see if she was all right and leave him in the middle of the dead Bandits.

The peak of his fear only lasted for a moment as Kahlan rushed over to his side, telling him how bad the wound on his arm looked. Zedd ambled over to them, and Richard saw Cara standing alone. And for a moment he knew how she felt.

But only for a moment.
