A Father's Love

I sit and stare at the sleeping face of my son. He looks so peaceful, his face so innocent, his dark hair falling carelessly onto his face. We never could get it to say in place. I smile sadly, my heart clenching as I brush the brown locks off his face.

I glance away from my sleeping son, looking out the window and into the starry night. I sigh, closing my eyes as I let the sound of the ocean wash over me.

I've loved this boy since I first set eyes on him. Every moment I now have with him is a precious gift, and I am dreading the coming moment when his love is taken from me forever. Lois assures me that that will never happen, but I know better. How can I compete with the hero from the stars?

Once Jason learns of his true parentage, my love for him will become a simple memory, as Superman takes the place as his father. My place. It is inevitable. I pray that when the moment comes Jason will still want me in his life. I already lost Lois to the superhero; I hope that I don't lose my son as well.

No matter what his DNA may say, in my heart Jason will always be my son. The boy whose first word was Daddy, the one I taught how to walk and play catch, who I comforted after a scary nightmare.

Oh, why did he have to come back?! I open my watering eyes, looking straight up at the ceiling. Why?! I glance away, once again squeezing my eyes shut as I take a shaky breath, trying unsuccessfully to hold back my tears.

"Daddy?"

I jump slightly, quickly wiping away the tears before looking back at the bed. "Yes, Jason?" I reply, swallowing tightly.

"Are you alright?" he asks, his sleepy eyes widening as he stares at me. "You were crying."

I give him a tight smile. "I'm fine. Go back to sleep."

"You sure?" he asks, concern ringing clearly in his voice.

"I'm alright," I quickly reassure him. "Now, time for bed." I gently pat the pillow.

Jason frowns at me, before reluctantly placing his head back down on the pillow. "Daddy?" he says, as I slowly start to get off the side of the bed.

"Yes Jason?" I glance back over at him.

He quickly scrambles out from under the covers, reaching up, pulling me down as he envelops me in a big hug. "I love you Daddy!" he whispers into my ear, his arms wrapped around my neck.

"Oh, Jason," I hoarsely reply, tears once again welling up, as I hold his small body tightly against my chest as I slowly sit back down on the bed. "I love you too, my son. Never forget that. Never!"

"I won't, Daddy," Jason sleepily whispers as he snuggles up, resting his head on my chest.

I quietly sit there for a few moments, listening to Jason's steady breathing as he falls asleep in my arms.
