Princes

Once upon a time, in a totally different universe that is unbelievably similar to the one we live in, there was a kingdom. The name of this country/kingdom thing was Jepen. The country of Jepen, was ruled by the house of Sohma, and had been for centuries. Because the original king, King Kami, had thirteen sons, the Sohma family was large. You could go to any part of the country, and you would find at least one Sohma there. However, most of the Sohmas lived in Teako, the capitol city.
Now, it was the tradition of the Sohma family to have a select thirteen be princes, in honor of the original thirteen princes. It was also tradition, that none of these princes could become king, since that had what happened with the original thirteen. King Kami, being the wisest person in the country, decided that if he chose just one to be king, there would be a revolt, considering that he had always treated the princes equally. So when the time came for him to choose an heir, he chose a distant cousin, and during the last two years of his life, he taught the boy how to run the country. When that boy had grown to be an old man, instead of choosing one of his own children, he also chose a distant cousin. Whenever one of the princes dies, if they don't have any legal children, they must choose someone from the family. If they die before naming an heir to their title, the king chooses the heir. It has been that way for centuries, and it will remain that way, until someone shakes the balance of living in the house of Sohma…
