~Chapter 1~

Gary swiped the sleep from his eyes as his squire Padraig of Sessel roused him. "Urgh," he growled, "Why are you waking me? I don't have any appointments today!"

"But Sir, King Jonathan wants to see you immediately!" Gary scowled at his squire who was beaming impishly back at him, holding out a rough tunic and breeches, that Gary snatched and began to pull on.

Jonathan of Conté sat quietly at his desk, eyes fixed on the heavy wooden door, he didn't stir when a loud knock echoed around his study, he merely called "Come in!" His cousin's beaming face emerged around the door, but he soon became serious when he saw Jon's frown.

"Jon?"

"Tusaine has invaded, a rider just brought word, I need to send an army and I want you to lead it."

"But Jon, surely Raoul and the Own would be more useful" Gary said fighting to keep any excitement from his voice.

"In any other case I would be inclined to agree with you, but the Own are needed in the desert so it falls to you to assemble an army," standing and allowing a wry smile to creep onto his lips he added, "but you're not going without me."

Gary grinned back at the young king "So I guess I'm just window dressing?" he asked mischievously.

Before long Gary had an army of the finest knights he could muster, including Sir Alanna, the King's Champion. At that moment she was engrossed in the king's address, whilst Gary organised a squire to assist her.

After Jon had finished hi address Gary led the small boy towards Alanna and coughed to attract her attention, "Alanna," he smiled "allow me to introduce Tobias of Ancona, he will serve as your squire whilst we are in action."

Alanna grinned vaguely at Tobias who smiled back shyly, his unruly dark brown hair fell over his blue-green eyes, "Hello, Tobias is it?"

"Yes, Sir," he answered trying to avoid making eye contact with Tortall's lady knight.

"Well," Alanna finally said, mounting her steed as she spoke, "let's get going."

A month later and Alanna and Tobias were sat on a large rock, hidden in the brush overlooking the river, which separated Tusaine and Tortall.

"I remember my squire years," Alanna whispered quietly, "I was the King's, well he was the Prince then, squire," she laughed to herself, "I was Alan of Trebond," Alanna stopped suddenly when she heard a voice behind her, she spun and was faced with four grinning Tusaine knights, all with swords drawn.

Without a word Alanna lunged at the foremost of the knights and began to slash at the towering form. Meanwhile, Tobias stood awestruck as his knight mistress felled the tallest of the knights and locked swords with a second. She grunted with pain as her shoulder jarred when she caught the sallow skinned knight's blade on the down stroke. Struggling to regain her balance Alanna stumbled and fell backwards, her sword flying from her hand and clattering to the ground.

As Alanna scrambled backwards in an attempt to avoid the knight's blade, Tobias stood eyes wide, hand resting lazily on the hilt of his weapon.

A/N: OK, this is my first TP fic, so what did you think? Be honest; if you love it, say you love it and if you hated it, say you hated it. All reviews are welcome at least that way I know people are reading it!
