As they Lie in their Coffin Together
He lay beside the still heart.
Listened to its timeless echo
in his ear.
He still remembered
how it was:
Every pit-a-pat pat
when that girl had been full
of life
But now she was like him,
and often he'd wake in a panic
to see if she'd become as cold,
Become a wild thing
to be hunted down
But she opened her eyes,
sharper and more beautiful than before,
and smiled: a sharper
not sweeter smile
And he'd be comforted by the fact
that she remained
Even if her heart was no
longer sound.
