Love hurts
A one off written a while ago when I first discovered that we would find out who River was. Post Day of the Moon. Hope you enjoy!

Amy and Rory had been persuaded to get some fish and chips and the Doctor sat alone. Heaven knows what those two thought he'd go looking for. Something had been strange about those two. Ever since he'd met them in that café diner with River. But he wouldn't dwell on it. No one should know too much about their own future as it usually brought pain and anguish, not happiness.
As they'd walked from the TARDIS, the Doctor had watched them both on the scanner. Walking along the seafront, on a quest to find the most delicious fish and chips in the universe. After some prompting from the Doctor, of course. They'd held hands. Amy skipping along, whilst Rory had tried to keep her back. Her enthusiasm sometimes seemed too much for him. That was until she kissed him on the cheek. He had returned it, before vanishing from the scanner's range.
The Doctor had felt old. Well…he was old. Very old. But he couldn't remember the last time he'd felt like that. Watching as two young people fell further and further in love recalled his sense of age. He'd seen companions over the years grow closer. Seeing Amy and Rory, and actually see them married, brought a whole new sense of loss to the Doctor. Over the millennia, there had been the odd occasion when he'd felt that connection one feels associated with love. The elation at seeing them enter the room. The sadness at seeing them leave again. The sorrow one feels when the person you care for just isn't there anymore. He'd had that feeling. Recently too. But the name was hidden. Was it sad that he couldn't remember her name? Maybe. He wouldn't dwell on her further. He never knew what distant, hurtful memories he might unlock.
He had thought love was a difficult question when he was concerned. He thought he could never fall in love. It seemed like a far off person in a faraway land. Always close enough to touch, but never to hold.
But the whole River affair was crossing his mind. He'd know who she was soon. Or so she had said. Never knew whether to trust River or not. She'd named him and kissed him. Two very scary things for the Doctor to bear witness to. Two things he'd never thought would happen. He didn't know if he was looking forward to discovering who she was. He didn't even know if love was a good thing anymore. Would he be able to benefit from it after so long out in the dark? Time would tell. It always did.
