Chasing the Impossible
People chased after things they couldn't get.
Humans strive for immortality which isn't attainable because life ends. Men crave unending fortune which isn't possible because money runs out. Women pine over first loves and ex's which isn't healthy because people move on.
These things were for the common folk. Those who aren't able to look beyond. Those who aren't blessed by the gods. Those who aren't like him.
Atobe Keigo never believed in chasing the impossible.
Then again, his definition of impossible was vastly different from what the common people deemed impossible.
To be king. That was possible through effective display and natural charisma. After all, he was the king of Hyotei.
To defeat his rivals. That was possible though hard work and natural abilities. After all, there were hardly any people worthy to be his rivals.
To take the number one spot in Nationals. That was possible through luck and natural talent. After all, it was only luck Echizen won.
(The match could have gone either way, Atobe firmly believes.)
Yet here he was: chasing the impossible.
Atobe Keigo believed himself to be above such common behavior, such mundane behavior. But the more this impossibility flaunted itself at him, the more he wanted to grasp it.
Even if it was just beyond the tips of his fingers. He could still feel the heat from the tips of his fingers. However, he knew it would never be close enough to the tips of his fingers.
Never close enough.
It was common sense that was telling him to stop acting foolish. Let it go. Stop chasing.
"Atobe." A nod was sent his way.
That's all it took.
Everytime he convinced himself to give it up. Just a slight nod, a greeting, an acknowledgement.
That's all it took for him to start chasing again.
"Tezuka!"
Reaching out, Atobe Keigo grasped the fabric of the other's jersey. He could feel the heat radiating from the other side at the tips of his fingers.
Tezuka Kunimitsu turned around confused and surprised but did not move away.
He was far from reaching his impossible, but for now, this was enough.
"Ne, Tezuka, are you free this weekend?"
After all, chasing the impossible took time.
