I blame this story on hollyblue on livejournal, and McTabby for issuing the Blame Someone Else Challenge. This would never have come from my pen otherwise.
Binding Us Together
Lucius Malfoy was not the first to possess Tom Riddle's diary. That honour belonged to one whose fate was inextricably bound with Lucius' son, Draco. And no, it was not Harry Potter.
Father says I'm supposed to write in this, but I have no idea what to write. I'm supposed to be the strong, silent type.
Well, for starters, you could tell me your name.
I'm Gregory Goyle, and you?
Tom Riddle's the name. Are you related to Harald Goyle?
He's my grandfather. Why?
Just making certain I ended up in the right hands. Are you still at Hogwarts?
It'll be my second year there, come September.
And what time is it now?
It's February. Look, I have to go. There's someone coming, and I don't want them to know I keep a diary. I'll write later.
Months passed, and soon Gregory was staying up late to write to Tom. He was doing marginally better in his classes, as Tom would give him hints on how to accomplish his potions well, do transfigurations, and the like. But Gregory also began to fall asleep in class, or at the dinner table, or in the library, often enough for Dumbledore to notice and begin to question why. Gregory told him nothing, as Tom had instructed him to do.
School ended shortly after that, and Gregory and The Diary, Tom's Diary, returned home. Almost innocuously, Gregory began spending more time with the Diary, bringing it everywhere. His father began to be concerned with all this talk of Tom, whom he had never seen. One day in July, before Gregory awoke, his father stole into his room and took the Diary. Opening it, he saw that it was empty. Yet he knew he had seen his son writing in it. It was then that he knew he had made the right decision of getting rid of it. While he was a staunch supporter of Lord Voldemort, he didn't like messing with dark magic. He brought it to the sitting room, where Lucius Malfoy sat.
"I'm glad you've come on such short notice."
"Yes, well when I heard about your predicament, I knew I had to come."
"Here it is. Take it before he wakes, I don't think he'll take it very well when he does wake."
"Take what well, Father?"
"Noth- Gregory, what are you doing up so early?"
"I couldn't feel Tom anymore. Where's my diary, Father?"
"Lucius is taking it. I don't want you fooling around with that thing anymore."
"No! You can't separate us, Father! I love-" Gregory stopped mid-sentence, his eyes growing large, his face draining of all colour.
"Lucius, leave now. I never want to see that diary near my son, ever again."
Lucius got up and saw himself out. As he opened the front door, he heard the spell that erased Gregory's mind of all that had occurred during the past few months. Smiling to himself, he began to plot the downfall of Albus Dumbledore and his precious Hogwarts.
