To be held. To be wanted. To be needed. And to be loved? Maybe that too.

That was how it felt to wake up in Lindsay Monroe's arms. His Montana.

Dawn broke over New York City, the early morning sky grazed with soft gold and vibrant pink. The sound of the traffic and the sound of their breathing were the only noises that penetrated the bedroom as the sunlight streamed in.

Danny Messer reached out for his glasses and slipped them on. The lavender coloured sheets were soft against his skin as he breathed in the sweet scent that he had come to associate with Lindsay. He placed his hand on her shoulder and smoothly ran it over her satin-like skin. Danny moved his body closer to her sleeping form, savouring the warmth between them. Danny gently put his arms around her gently so not to wake her up before she was ready. Contentedly, Danny fell back into a peaceful sleep with Lindsay pressed close to him as the city began to come to life outside.

Lindsay was the first to awake this time. She smiled as she looked at Danny, his glasses knocked askew. She put them right for him and then ran her fingers over the designer stubble on Danny's handsome face. Slowly, Danny woke up again, a grin settling over his features. He leant closer to Lindsay, his lips grazing hers. She responded to his kisses, melting into his arms.

Ten minutes later, Lindsay untangled herself from Danny's embrace and climbed out of her bed, slipping on a lilac bathrobe. Danny watched as she left the bedroom, the feeling of confusion seeping in. He waited a few minutes before putting on his boxer shorts and going off in search of Lindsay.

In the end it was his nose that lead him to her. The scent of brewing coffee and toasting bread brought him to the kitchen where Lindsay was preparing breakfast for them both. Danny smirked to himself as he heard Lindsay humming softly to herself. He walked up behind her and encircled her slender waist with his arms and pressed soft kisses into her neck. She turned and met Danny's lips with her own before going back to her cooking. Danny poured the coffee into two large mugs for them, feeling a little guilty that Lindsay was doing all the work in the kitchen. He watched her; she was even beautiful doing something as domestic as preparing a meal. It was as riveting watching her pour pancake mixture into a pan as it was when she was processing evidence at the Crime Lab.

They sat opposite each other at the table laden with blueberry pancakes and fresh toast, cradling mugs of strong black coffee. Conversation came and flowed easily as always, along with the teasing banter and the flirtation of course. Danny hadn't felt this relaxed with a woman since, well, since Aiden Burn. She would tell him to go for it, to take the risk because that was who she was. Danny would take the chance, he would take the plunge and make this thing work between him and Lindsay. He would honour the memory of his best friend.

"Are you okay Danny?" Lindsay asked, swallowing a mouthful of coffee and looking across at him, noticing the far away look in his eyes.

Danny smiled across as her, taking her hand. "Never better Montana, never better."
