She could see the fascination on his face; The way his eyes lit up with curiosity, awe, and a flicker of fear. As she sat there watching him, she couldn't help but replay their last chat in her mind. Did she truly have his back? Would she protect him from others' ridicule? Would she do anything to help him? … Of course.

Snapping back to the present, she could hear Locke and Jack arguing up ahead.

"We need someone smaller."

"No, we don't, John. I'm small enough."

"I'm telling you, we-"

"And I'm telling you that I'm fine." Jack yelled as he shot him a look of warning.

Bending down to see what was finally in the hatch, Kate asked, "What's going on?"

"I'm going down there to check it out. See what we can find." Jack said, helping her stand back up.

"Then I'm coming with you."

Sighing, Jack replied, "Kate, no."

"Jack you cant keep me from doing this again."

A small silence crept over the area as Jack and Kate looked intensely at one another. Breaking the stare, Jack quickly glanced at Locke then back to Kate.

"Can we talk about this…in private?"

Taking a moment to think it over, Kate finally nodded and turned towards the path. Jack followed, quickly trying to prepare even one word that he could say.

Kate stopped and leaned against a large tree, arms crossed. She noticed their close proximity, as their toes touched and Jack leaned one hand against the tree to the right of her head. She was startled that she wasn't offended by the forward gesture, but for once she wanted him to be even closer.

Realizing it was now or never, Jack let out in a small voice, "Kate, I just don't want you to get hurt. I want- I need to protect you."

As she gazed into his dark eyes, she could see the sincerity that was deep within. For that one moment, nothing else mattered. For that one moment, her world had stopped. As she brought her hand up to his face, she whispered, "Jack…"

Knowing there were no words left to say, Jack leaned in and placed a small kiss gently on her lips. And for the first time in his life, his world had stopped too.
