Sometimes Bucky forgot.
Forgot that it was normal to keep knives in the kitchen, that it was normal for the walls to make funny sounds at night. Forgot that it was normal for there to be cameras in the corners of the room, that it was normal for someone to clap him on the back, or punch him in the shoulder, and not mean any harm. Forgot that he was allowed to have free will now, though he never forgot Steve's sad look when he did.
Sometimes Bucky forgot.
Forgot that it wasn't normal to keep knives under his pillow, that it wasn't normal to check his room for threats twice before laying down to sleep. Forgot that it wasn't normal to only ever sit in the middle of the couch, or on one of the bar stools, and never on a normal chair. Forgot that it wasn't normal to be watching TV with the others and then come back to reality an hour later in a closet seven floors down. Forgot that it wasn't normal to stay seated and still hours after everyone else went to bed, waiting for orders. He never forgot when Steve came in at 3am and gently guided him to bed.
Sometimes Bucky forgot.
But sometimes, he didn't.
He didn't forget Steve's constant warm shoulder to lean on, and his ability to talk with Bucky like nothing had changed in the 70+ years that followed Bucky's fall. He didn't forget Tony's welcome sarcasm to everything, and trading insults back and forth like playing cards. He didn't forget Natasha's warm back to lean against when it all got too much and her small understanding smiles. He didn't forget Clint, who he had conducted epic pranks with, and at least understood what it was like to be a merc with too many hits on his back. He didn't forget Bruce, who maybe understood him best out of all of them after Natasha, and who had read up on psychiatry in the week after Bucky moved in, just to know how to help when he could. He didn't forget Thor, who was perhaps the easiest to let go around and be himself, probably due to the god's genuity for everything. He didn't even forget Scott's warm presence, who had next to no personal boundarys as he chattered away excitedly without expecting any reply. Or T'Challa, who was a pretty good mate once he stopped trying to kill him.
So sometimes Bucky forgot.
But sometimes, he didn't.
