Disclaimer: I do not own anything from Nintendo, such as the characters, plots and the many other settings. I'm just a fan of most of their work and, I quite enjoy some the games. I know that this was done before, but I decided that I'd give it a shot. This was one of my favorites when I was younger, so please be nice. I also decided to add a few of my own little twists so, ya.
The Legend of Zelda
Ocarina of Time
Prologue
A long time ago, in the ancient land known as Hyrule, within the dense forest, laid a race known only as the Kokiri. The Kokiri were a race who remained hidden to the world, protected by the spirit of the Great Deku Tree. If a Kokiri were to leave the forest, he or she would most likely die. Unlike the other races of Hyrule, the Kokiri consisted of only children, each on watched over by his or her guardian fairy.
However, there was one boy who didn't have a fairy of his own. This boy knew not of the destiny that had been set before him in stone by the gods, waiting for his time of awakening as a savior. This is the story of Link, the boy raised in the Kokiri Forest; about to embark on the journey that destiny has been setting before him since the very day he had been born…
Chapter 1: The Kokiri Forest
The wind blew within the Kokiri Forest, as the sun began to rise from the east. An early morning dawned down upon the Kokiri, and it looked as though it would be clear of rain, the lack of clouds in the sky resembled this. As the sun began to rise from the horizon, each Kokiri came out from their respective houses for the new day. That is, save for one boy.
Within the only tree house in the forest, lay a boy in bed who, apparently was still sleeping. He wore mainly green, his blonde hair that wasn't covered by his matching green hat scattered across his head area. By the ways he quivers in his sleep though, you'd probably start to think that this boy is having a nightmare. Indeed, that is what he sees, and what lies outside the forest...
The boy sees himself standing outside a massive wall, in front of a large decending bridge. Beside him, he sees a small, glowing character with wings, supposedly a fairy. He hears a strange noise, a whinny of sorts from some kind of animal off in the distance. It was odd, for the sound was familiar to him, but yet, he wasn't told what kind of creature would make that kind of sound. The chains that operated the door rattled with every movement that lowered the bridge, until it was settled to close the gap with the nearby waterway that flowed far down from the deep valley.
Link looked beyond the bridge that had opened up towards the town that had opened up to him. As he does, the rain fell down hard, thunder and lightning cracking off in the distance that would make him jump momentarily. The walls to the city were just massive, well-ornated with assortments upon assortments of colors besides greens and browns that made up the forest. Add to the fact they were made of solid stone as well showed that it must be well-defended of a city, though… he was surrounded by the sounds of battle, and yet, it was too dark for him to make out any other stand-out features other than the castle, the gate that had opened up, and… what was now heading his way.
There was some heavy sounds coming towards him, almost like footsteps, but at the same time, not as well; they had a more firm, almost metallic *Thunk!* sound to them in a repeated fashion. As they approached, Link took careful consideration of what the creature was; it walked on four legs, was white with a dark contrast for its mane, though… ran in this sense made sense, and it seemed to have two riders; not one, but two. The first was a much more elderly woman, though he couldn't make out her facial features since her gaze was cast straight ahead of them, dressed in a black robe with a noticeable red eye on the back.
The other was a young girl, dressed in elegant clothes and headwear, a noticeable symbol located in the very middle of her headdress. Unlike the other rider, this younger girl was looking back at Link with blue eyes, with an expression that asked the question that she needed help and… also, apologetic as well. Link, naturally, didn't understand why she would be expressing it like this, though, as they rode off towards the darkness, only then he heard more sounds coming from behind him.
Looking over his shoulder at first, he was surprised to see a black creature right before him, much like the one that ran by with the two riders, but… it seemed a bit more… evil, really. Though, the evil within was nothing as compared to the eyes of its rider, a man with red hair clad in black armor as he fixed his gaze out to where the previous riders took off. Quickly, his attention turned to Link himself, raising a hand as he does and it was there the boy watched him produce a ball of energy, which Link felt helpless to defend again. Though, before it would be released, he would hear a voice call out to him, as if wanting him to get it together…
"Hello, Link! Wake up!" A voice, most likely a female's called above the boy, "The Great Deku Tree wants to talk to you. Link, get up!" Either he was just lazy, or he was having a bad enough day, he turned over as if he never heard the voice. Link still believed he was still dreaming, really, hence why he didn't want to get involved any more than necessary. The last thing he wanted to think is that Mido sent someone here to try and pull a prank on him.
Mido was the boss of the Kokiri, with orange hair and while he wore the same kind of clothing that the others did, he was the boss because he was the only one who used the Kokiri Sword to defend them. All Link had was a slingshot for a weapon, but he used it because, unlike the others, he was the only one who didn't have a guardian fairy, and it really proved useful to make up for his disadvantage… but even with all this in mind, Link wanted to sleep.
"Hey! C'mon!" The voice yelled, rather impatient, "Can Hyrule's destiny really depend on such a lazy boy?" it added, this time more annoyed. This time, though, Link raised himself up, yawning as he does so. But, he was making out that the voice was female, so he was wondering if it was the girl that was in the dream talking to him with some weird means… yeah, right, like that would ever happen.
"Can't a guy get some sleep around here…?" Link responded, rather lazily. He looked around and, practically the last thing he noticed was a fairy floating before him. He wasn't too shocked though, as he's seen them a lot for his entire life, though the fact a fairy was in his home was a startling event. Still overcome with some sleep, Link let out another groan as he watched the fairy float over to his face, as if allowing him to get a better look… or something. From what he can see through the bluish glow was a girl under the guise of bright light.
"I was told to get you from the Great Deku Tree, so that would include waking you up if you were asleep." The fairy said, shrugging, "Anyways, my name is Navi and The Great Deku Tree told me to bring you to him. But, I think I would recommend that you should equip yourself before we get going…" She said, as Link looked at her with some aw. Well… she wasn't his guardian fairy yet, but he was hoping this would be the case, yet considering everything that was said about "equipping himself" threw him off. The Deku Tree's meadow was a safe place, danger never lurks there without reason for it to be.
"But with what, might I ask? The only thing I have is this slingshot that I made with my own hands." Link said, holding up a fairly decently made slingshot, the one he had been using for his own gain while the Kokiri had their fairies do for them. "If it's help that you want, go ask Mido or something. He's the one who's got- Ouch!" Link didn't finish when Navi smacked him across the cheek. It was rather surprising, actually; just how could a fairy pack a punch quite like that?
"The Great Deku Tree didn't ask for Mido. He asked for you, and it's you who he's getting, alright?" Navi said as Link rubbed his sore cheek, nodding shortly after in defeat. It's not like he had much of a choice in the matter; the Deku Tree was the Kokiri's guardian, so it was he who decided who shall and shall not see him at the time. "Oh, and by the way, I saw one of you friends show up. I think her name was Saria, right?" the fairy added, as Link rushed out past Navi. Saria was Link's childhood friend, and the only Kokiri that every really stood by his side and understood him while the others stuck more with Mido…
Link looked down from his ladder and, saw a girl with green hair that matched what she wore, which was the usual green tunic and shorts. She waved as her green eyes looked up at him, "Good morning, Link!" she greeted, smiling afterwards. Link smiled back as Navi caught up to him. Link climbed down the ladder and walked up to the girl, smiling. Ever since Link could remember, Saria had been taking care of herself well, and keeping her image rather sharp even if her youth was eternal.
Yes, the Kokiri keep their youth because they never grow up; that has and always been the law of the forest that Link had been taught by the Deku Tree. Even though he was the only one without a fairy to guide him, Saria keeps assuring him that the day will come that one will accompany him, chosen by the Deku Tree. Yet, with how long it has been since he had come to know his surroundings, Link could only hope that Navi was to be entrusted to him… even though she did seem like a pain with her earlier impression.
"Good morning to you as well Saria! If you're wondering who this is, her name is Navi." Link spoke, trying to get upbeat once again, not letting thoughts of a pain-in-the-ass fairy like Navi get to him. Saria smiled at him, like she always did whenever they two had met up; usually as a means to assure Link when he was feeling down, or when Link was doing the effort of cheering her up, which was actually quite rare since she gets along with everyone in the forest. She was rather popular among the Kokiri; Mido actually may feel a bit of attraction towards her, based on rumors he heard.
"So, does this mean you have your own guardian fairy, Link?" She asked, as her own fairy flew up to Navi. Like Navi, this fairy gave off a glow, but this was more pinkish. As Link could remember, the name of Saria's fairy was Alicia, and she had an admiration to the color pink. It seems that Saria had noticed Navi, who had flown over to Link's side right away in an effort to keep up with him; Link had too much energy, he was better to be in the middle of lazy and energetic, she believed, not that Link will now.
Link shook his head before answering, "Well, Navi didn't exactly put it that way. She only came to get me to meet with the Great Deku Tree, according to her, anyways." When he finished, Saria looked at him with her smile remained, though a tad surprised at that remark. For the past while, the Deku Tree hadn't allowed anyone to come see him in his glade, so it was surprising he sent a fairy to deliver the message that Link was to go see him immediately.
"Really? So you're going to see the Great Deku Tree, then? I must be an honor to see him. It wasn't since a few days ago when that man showed up on a black creature. But before he arrived, any could've gone to see the guardian to us Kokiri." Saria said, as Alicia began to whisper in her ear. Link rose an eyebrow at the mention of this; black creature with a man as their rider… it sounded similar to the man that appeared in his dreams just recently, but that is too coincidental, so he shrugged it off at first.
Link couldn't hear the conversation Saria was having with her fairy, but he knew it wasn't any of his business. He was polite to know better than to get into anyone's business without intention behind it, and right now, he had nothing, so he stuck his nose where it belonged. Soon, the conversation between the both of them ended as Saria said, "Okay, go on and see the Great Deku Tree. I'll wait here, if that's alright?" She tilted her head to the left slightly as she said this.
Link couldn't help but nod, but then went to thinking; it would be a bit unfair to be the only one going, so he would reply, "Well, if you would prefer, anyways, and if Navi will allow it…" Link glared at Navi before returning his attention back to his best friend, "…that if you'd like to come along…" Link couldn't finish as he noticed that, either it was the sun or she was just really happy, Saria's green eyes sparkled more than normal.
"W-would you really do that Link?" She asked, as Link nodded in agreement. Saria giggled again, probably in giddy for Link was well aware she hadn't seen the Deku tree in quite some time. Eventually, Saria would turn to him before answering, "Of course I would Link." Link could've sworn he heard growling come from Navi, but ignored it. Soon the little fairy flew between the two, glowing slightly yellow. Link was somewhat curious how Navi could change colors that quickly; she was just glowing blue a moment ago, wasn't she?
"Link, either I didn't tell you before, or you're just plain idiotic, the Great Deku Tree only wants to see you." Navi growled, glaring at Link. Link just wanted her to shut up, but instead didn't take it seriously. It seems that, if Navi was to be entrusted to him, Link would feel he would rather wait until someone with a few more manners would become available to be given someone to look after. At least, that was just what Link was thinking right now; all of this was based on Navi's attitude that has been displayed so far, and she can't even bend the rules a little? Well, she had another thing coming, really…
"Fine, if she can't go, I won't either…" Link began, as Saria, Alicia and Navi received a shocked look. Navi flew up closer to him and gave him another glare. Clearly, this seemed like Link's attempt at a threat; it may be ridiculous, but Saria was Link's friend and all, and there was no way he was going to have her be left out just because a fairy was telling him otherwise. Navi had serious disapproval written all over, as the yellow glow shifted to a much more aggressive red.
"You can't be serious, can you?" She said in a somewhat furious tone, while Link just nodded, grinning slightly. Link may have been acting rather stubborn about it, but someone between the two would have to cave. Navi grumbled a bit, the glow steadily returning to yellow, and then her standard blue, showing she had caved in, before saying, "Fine, but if anything happens to her, ANYTHING at all, it's your fault for being stubborn, alright?" She said, as she flew towards the path right ahead of the two. It seems she didn't want to wait up for them too long, so she kept a firm distance away.
Link smiled and looked at Saria, who returned his smile. They followed Navi towards their next destination, the Great Deku Tree, going through the small town that consisted of hollowed-out trees and even some hand-built structures along the way. They said hello to the other Kokiri as they walked by, some even surprised that there was a fairy with Link. Link smiled at the newfound attention he didn't receive before, and welcomed it with open doors... even if it would be brief considering that he hoped he would get another fairy in place of Navi.
After some time of walking, they would arrive to the path that would lead onwards to the glade of the Deku Tree. Standing before this very path was, in green clothing, the boss of the Kokiri, Mido. Freckles across his face followed by brown eyes, as well as the Kokiri Sword at his side, looked at the pair. He clearly admired Saria, but he could care less what could happen to Link; considering just how long Link had been without a fairy, he could not bring himself to accept Link as a Kokiri.
"Hey, Saria, why do you even hang out with, "Mr. No Fairy"…" Mido stopped as he noticed Navi flying beside Link, "Saria, if this is some kind of joke, please end it immediately, as it's not funny to get me to believe that there's a fairy with Link." He asked, a bit lazily. Saria however, shook her head, in an effort to stand up for Link; the boy was really glad to have someone like Saria to be his friend.
"It's no joke Mido, a fairy finally did come to Link. And he's been told that he has to go see the Great Deku Tree." Saria told the boss of the Kokiri, and Mido, almost instantly became shocked, as if to fall over. But he shook his head in disbelief soon after, recovering rather quickly in an effort to get himself to believe this was actually happening. Mido and Link had bad blood since they got to know each other, though part of it is Mido taking the power to his head too seriously, so Link believed.
"I don't believe that. Besides, even if it were true, he's not even properly equipped to see the Great Deku Tree." Mido said, glaring at Link, further expressing his hatred for the odd Kokiri, "He should at least equip both a sword and a shield before he can pass. But, as far as I can tell, that's never gonna happen, because I have the only sword in the whole forest, plus the shield will cost him. But, if he does happen to get that shield, I MIGHT possibly give him the sword. I don't even use it much, anyways…" he added, shrugging, and… well, he had a point there about the sword. And, well, Link was broke, and it's not like Ruppees are just growing out of trees, right?
Saria spoke shortly after, "Link, could you wait here for a minute? I'll be right back…" and before either Link or Mido knew it, she was off, followed by Alicia. Mido glared at Link, arms across his torso; yep, Link was starting to feel his blood boiling just by standing this close to Mido, but, he had to keep calm, keep it cool…
"Shoot, how did you become the favorite of both Saria and the Great Deku Tree anyways, huh?" Link heard Mido mutter after a short while, grumbling under his breath as well about something, "Seriously though, you shouldn't even be here in the forest. You should've been better off outside the forest…" Link growled, but knew that if he did anything, all the chances of him going to see the Great Deku Tree will be lost.
Outside the forest… that was the place that, should a Kokiri ever leave the forest, they will die to the creatures that lurk out there. This was what the Deku Tree had taught the Kokiri, Link included, and it was left off-limits for anyone head beyond the forest near the edge of the Farron province. Right now, Link and the entire Kokiri population was in the Ordon province, just south of it. Beyond that, it was unknown of the rest of the land was like, for Kokiri have never left the forest before.
Soon after, Saria arrived; carrying what looked like a wooden shield with the Kokiri symbol it. "Will this do, Mido?" She asked, as Mido looked shockingly at the shield she brought. He closed his eyes and grumbled before nodding in acceptance. Saria smiled as she handed the shield to Link, while he just looked at her. This was really an act of true friendship between the both of them… in addition to some newfound jealousy from Mido, without a doubt.
"Are you sure Saria? I mean, you just spent forty rupees on a shield. I just don't think it's fair to put you through that…" Link said, blushing. Saria smiled, and Link knew what that possibly meant. 'Don't worry about it.' is what he thought she would say. He accepted the shield and, felt a nudge from Mido. He turned around and saw the boss of the Kokiri holding out the Kokiri's most sacred treasure.
"Take it, and go talk to the Great Deku Tree already… Don't make me change my mind from you sticking around for too long!" Mido exclaimed, his tone clearly aggressive and upset, but with Saria there, he couldn't be as complete of a nuisance compared to how he usually treated Link. Link took the blade and placed it on his back; he had used Deku Sticks to practice himself in combat techniques, but they were not nearly as powerful as the sheer strength of cold steel had to provide. He did the same with the shield afterwards before heading down the path to the Great Deku Tree and the meadow he always rested in, followed by Saria shortly after…
Author's notes: I took some ideas from not only the game, but also from the manga of Ocarina of Time. Anyways, please R&R, heck; I'd even accept flamers as well if I have to. To those who have read this chapter before; notice any changes? Looking back on it, I'm going back to refine and lengthen my existing chapters in whatever way I can, starting here all the way to Chapter 8. Keep your eyes open for updates!
