When We Were Young
This is a challenge from a forum I am in called StreamClan. Enjoy!
"Plumkit! Stop stepping on my tail!."
"Maybe I would, if you'd walk a bit quicker Yellowkit!"
"Guys! Stop arguing!" Mousekit meowed.
Gorsekit just sighed in exasperation.
"That's enough!" Harefern exclaimed. "Why don't you four go visit the elders? You've been cooped up in here since morning! Go stretch your legs."
With that, Harefern nudged her kits outside the nursery and sat down with a sigh.
"Let's go! Race you guys! Whoever gets there last is fox-dung!" Mousekit shrieked.
The four kits trotted across the camp to the elders' den, getting under almost every single cat's paws.
Plumkit came to a halt at the entrance and then beckoned for her siblings to come inside, with her tail.
"Brightfrost, look! We have new visitors." Sheepfoot mewed.
"Kits! Hello! What brings you to the elders den?" Brightfrost asked.
Gorsekit answered, "We were wondering if you would be willing to tell us a story? About when you were young?"
"Sure! Gather 'round now" Sheepfoot replied.
Once the kits were settled, Brightfrost began.
"When we were young, about the age of an apprentice, IceClan was having a lot of trouble with BranchClan" she mewed. Pausing, she let Sheepfoot finish.
"BranchClan kept crossing our border by the stream and stealing prey. Too make matters worse, it was before leaf-bare. So our previous leader, Graystar, decided to teach them a lesson. One day, when all was quiet on the borders, Graystar sent a patrol of eight cats to the BranchClan border. Me and Brightfrost were apprentices, and went with our mentors. We were supposed to hide, and ambush them suddenly when they crossed."
"That sound cool! I'm going to be the best warrior ever!" Plumkit exclaimed.
"I'm sure you will be. Anyways, It was supposed to be nothing but a small border-skirmish, to let them know that we are keeping an eye on our borders. When BranchClan crossed, almost their whole clan was on the patrol. It was almost like they knew what we planned to do" Brightfrost finished.
"Did they?" Gorsekit asked.
Brightfrost hesitated, "Yes. One of our cats, Pikeclaw, ratted us out to the enemy. He was half BranchClan, his father lived there. He was unsure of which clan to live in and so he chose BranchClan. That was not the proper way to do it though" she muttered, shaking her head.
"Anyways, they spotted us and attacked. Me and Brightfrost were sent back to camp for reinforcements. By the time we arrived, we were losing. Pikeclaw fought with us, I don't understand why, but after awhile he started to attack us. His own clan. At the end of the battle, we had won. It was not our best battle, but possibly the most conflicted one."
"Did any cat die?" Yellowkit asked innocently.
"No, thankfully not. We had a few serious injuries but our cats healed fast." replied Sheepfoot.
"Thanks Brighfrost. And Sheepfoot." Gorsekit mewed.
"Yeah. This was a good story." Mousekit added.
"You're welcome. And by the way, Pikeclaw joined BranchClan because he had no family left here. His mother had died of greencough and he had no siblings. He didn't tell Graystar that he had an issue. That was why he made the battle more complicated. Remember, if you are ever going through something hard, always tell your clanmates. They are here to support you and love you. They want the best for you." Sheepfoot finished.
"Now if you kits would nicely leave, me and Sheepfoot are going to take a nap." Brightfrost added, with a chuckle.
"Thanks!" the kits chorused, and they trotted back to the nursery to tell poor Harefern what they had learned today.
Thanks for the challenge StreamClan!
