HOW IT BEGAN

Erik

I never expected to love a woman, all my life I've been shunned because of my face. Alright she wasn't a woman when we first met but hey I wasn't quite a man…

"Happy Birthday" I muttered to myself, "Seventeen today. Well done Erik for not committing suicide over the past twelve months"

I wasn't in the habit of talking to myself but every lonely person does it occasionally I'm sure of it. In the seven years I've resided below the Opera Populaire I've made the fifth cellar rather homely. A sudden restlessness came over me and I had to walk the tunnels for a while. I heard a girl praying in the room beyond the paper thin wall

"Father, I hope you can hear me" she said, "It's me, Christine Daae…"

Christine Daae was a new and rather clumsy member of the corps de ballet, at seven years old she was ten years my junior, she wasn't particularly attractive; a little past chubby with messy brown curls and dull dispassionate brown eyes.

"Please protect my papa in heaven, and please make sure he sends me my Angel of music"

'Angel of Music eh?' I thought to myself, 'Maybe I can have a little fun with her', if her voice is as bad as her dancing I'd be blunt and tell her I couldn't do anything for her

"Christine…" I called quietly, "Christine Daae…"

"Wh-who's there?"

I smirked at the fear in her voice, "I am your Angel of music" I announced, "Your Father sent me to you"

"Are you here to teach me?"

"I am" I told her, "I'll need you to sing to me before we start"

Why did I say that? I must be more bored than I thought.

"What would you have me sing?" she asked hesitantly

"Whatever you wish child"

'Here we go' I prepared to blot out the horrid din,

"Angel of music, guide and guardian

Come to my side, guide me

Angel of music bless me help me

I give my voice to thee"

I was amazed, inside the rather plain seven year old lay the perfect instrument, the girl was a diamond in the rough. I suddenly felt disgusted with the idea of tricking her, but she needed my help.

"Angel…?" Christine asked wondering, perhaps at my silence, "Are you still there?"

"Yes my dear" I said automatically. 'My dear?" I'd never called anyone dear, not even my own mother.

"Will you teach me?"

"Yes, I will."

"Oh thank you Angel!" she cried

"I'll call you later tonight; we'll start then, alright?"

"Yes Master."

'Master?' I liked the sound of that

"Get some rest child; you've a long night ahead".

CHRISTINE

I ran from the chapel elated but determined not to disappoint my new master, my Angel of music. I entered the dormitory, slipped on my nightgown and into bed. The other five girls were off making mischief and blaming it on the Opera Ghost. Eventually they came crashing in.

"Christine?" my Best friend, Meg Giry bounced onto my bed, her long blond hair tickling her cheeks, "Why are you in bed already, it's so early?"

"I…I feel a little tired… from practicing so much" I lied

"Liar" she pinched my arm, "We only had practice this morning!"

"Oh alright" I sighed, "I had trouble sleeping last night" My lie was more convincing this time.

"Oh fine," she smiled, "I'm sorry, I didn't know" she hugged me, "goodnight"

I opened my eyes, I was sure I'd heard my master call my name.

"Christine…"

"Master?" I whispered

"Yes, it's time. Follow me"

I hopped out of bed, pulled on my dressing gown and slippers and ran after his voice.

I arrived at the stage and the angel said,

"Are you ready?"

"Here?"

"Yes, you'll be singing on this stage in the future" he left off, "Now scales."

A violin played a beautiful scale. My eyes widened. The music ended.

"Sing Christine" the angel demanded the violin played again.

I sang.
