Sherlock has always been interested in chemistry, and drugs are part of it.
When he was young, he did experiments, but later, in highschool, as he was bullied, he seeked refuge in drugs. Marijuana, then hard drugs such as morphine or cocaine.
His older brother, Mycroft, knew Sherlock was getting into drugs right after his brother's first spliff.
He tried to hide it from their parents, but when his little brother started to take hard drugs, he felt the need to tell their parents. They were all worried about Sherlock, but they didn't really know what was the right thing to do.
The younger Holmes, was often found in squats by his brother, with junkies, high, and a few times overdosing.
Addiction is a special kind of Hell. It takes the soul of the addict and breaks the hearts of those who love them.
